Portland/Weymouth

We’ve come down to Portland in a very impromptu trip and so haven’t had time to plan what to do!

Does anyone have any recommendations for a sandy beach that isn’t too crowded? Or any other ideas about what is a must-see attraction? Other than eating a fuck load of fresh seafood, I haven’t the foggiest about what to do!

You’ve plenty of space on the main beach - head left to get the quieter bit. In Weymouth, Nothe Fort is well worth a visit - there’s a little ferry that takes you across. The Sealife centre’s good and there’s a big crazy golf next to it.
As for Portland, highly recommend getting the ferry across from the old harbour in Weymouth - there are dolphins and seals about at the moment, Jeff the captain usually manages to find some. On the island itself, there’s a D-Day museum next to where the ferry comes in. It’s really interactive- kids can climb on/in tanks etc. If you have English Heritage membership try the castle. Definitely take the open top bus to the Bill. It’s cheap and runs v regularly to get you back to Weymouth.
Lots of good places to eat, Bennett’s fish and chips in Weymouth particularly worth a visit.

If you have a car (not sure how easy it is by bus), tout quarry park on Portland is interesting and there are nice views of the sea.
