Probiotics and (what feels like) a never ending period

I just wanted to ask your thoughts on the possibility of probiotics causing a period that has gone on now for 18 days.

I started taking probiotic tablets about 4 weeks ago to try to restore some gut balance and reduce bloating etc… they have begun to do that, I think. However, my period began 18 days ago, stopped for one day after 3 days and then restarted and hasn’t stopped! My periods are usually very regular and last 5-7 days at most.

I can’t think of anything else that has changed, except the fact that I’m 40 and it may be peri menopause coming into affect?

I know that probiotics may balance hormones, but could a really long period be a result of this do you think?

No. No link. And definitely no link to hormones via a drink or pill where the contents are killed by your stomach acid....

I would be looking at what the root cause of the bloating is - it could be this that's causing your periods to fluctuate. Or, depending on your age, it could be peri menopause that's causing the bloating and changes to periods.

Thank you both. I was aware of the difficulty of probiotics and reaching the gut alive: The capsules I’m taking have a coating that results in delayed-release absorption in the intestines rather than in the gut, so that the contents are protected from stomach acid. Apparently, anyway!

I’ve read that probiotics can regulate estrogen levels so wondered if this was having an impact.

Probiotics 100% affect hormones!!! I started taking 2 months ago and while I’m getting some favourable symptoms like thicker hair, especially on top, and more energy, I’m getting crazy night sweats and my knee is aching. All the symptoms started about a a week after starting them and there is a lot on google about the “estroblome”. Going to see an endocrinologist to get to the bottom of it
