Did you shop in Reading in the 1980s?

Do you remember a shop called Cuckoo where you picked metal dangly earring ‘hooks’ and then spent hours in the shop threading them with your choice from the hundreds of different colours and styles of beads. You then took them to the till and the lady finished them with pliers - I’ve never seen a shop like that before or since!! No one but me remembers it! Did I dream it?

Smelly alley!!! Can remember buying crab sticks from the fishmonger. I remember Knights, Heelas of course. The shoe shop in broad street where the staff put your money in a tube on the wall and it shot up to the accounts department who put change in it. Was another world!!

@50but70inside the shop was Millwards, I worked there as a Saturday girl in the mid 80s. I remember the tubes!

Was a student in Reading in the late 70s. But is it Art? Was our go to place on Saturday afternoon, spent hours in there.
One of my flatmates exposed me to Clinique Dramatically Different moisturiser in Heelas when my forehead started peeling due to the change in tap water. I REALLY couldn't afford it, she could, but I bought a bottle anyway and used it for years until they changed the formula.
Drinking at The George, fun times.

Milwards! Of course! I haven’t heard that word for years - And Heelas was where I discovered Clinique too!

Jackson’s also used to send your money upon a tube, and it came back with the change and a handwritten receipt.

Do you remember the health food shop - I think it was called The High, which was round the corner from Jackson’s on Market Place?

I remember somewhere very similar to this is Edinburgh in the Grass market called Helious Fountain…

downstairs was like a jewellery pick and mix with all sorts of beads, and the metal bits to make earrings and upstairs was like a cafe but very alternative/health delicious food…

I had my 1st bit of Carrot cake there!
