Space next to the one with an EV charger?

Parked next to the space with an EV charger. Got back to an EV driver who informed me that, as there aren't enough places to charge EVs, then I shouldn't park in a space next to the spaces with EV chargers in them. As the EV charging leads can be stretched to the adjacent parking spaces. Is this true?

I don't drive an EV and the 2 spaces with EV chargers in them had cars parked there. I was parked in the 3rd space along, next to the 2 spaces with EV chargers in them.

It would depend on the length of the lead and the charge port location on the car. I’ve seen photos of porches at chargers parked across two bays horizontally because that’s the only way it would work for them. I’ve never used a charger outside of the bay before though.

Hidingawaytoday · 28/08/2022 17:17

Well that makes no sense, surely if they need to use the charger they park in the space? If the space was taken by another EV wouldn't the cable already be in use and therefore not available to stretch over?

ShelfyMcShelfface · 28/08/2022 17:27

I'm not sure, as I've never charged an EV. I did notice that one of the EVs in one of the spaces with an EV charger was parked but not charging. Maybe that was his gripe? But clearly not my issue, I was parked in a space with no EV charger and there were no signs stating I shouldn't park there. I just wondered if it was common practice to leave the space next to those with EV chargers free for EVs now?

Sounds like nonsense to me, if it isnt designated then it is a free space same with disabled and child and baby spaces.

Tessasanderson · 28/08/2022 17:33

What a load of rubbish. If it’s not marked EV then it’s for anyone

BigFatLiar · 28/08/2022 17:36

If its not a designated ev space its just a space.

BoredWithLife · 28/08/2022 17:39

It may be true the cable might reach but it's not relevant. If there is a car in the designated space charging, then the charger should be unavailable anyway. If the car in the designated space is not changing but blocking the charger, the other drivers issue is with that car not you.

Basically ignore them - and I do drive an EV! :)

Emmelina · 28/08/2022 17:39

If there was someone in the charging space but not charging, that’s something they need to take up with the driver of that car or go to see car park management. It’s not your problem. It’s frustrating for sure, but his anger is misplaced.

I drive electric and there’s a certain etiquette you learn very quickly when public charging! You don’t take a charging space unless you’re going to charge, because it’s frustrating to others if they happen along in need of the power and can’t get it. I just use a normal space and don’t charge/come back in a while and move to a now-free charger.

We definitely don’t have a monopoly on surrounding spaces - it would only move the problem onwards anyway when the original car leaves and someone can’t plug in.

ShelfyMcShelfface · 28/08/2022 17:45

He was pretty rude. "Look, this space is close to the EV chargers, it should be left for EV vehicles". I had DD with me and couldn't be bothered speaking to him. I just said, I'm going once I've got the car loaded, so you can have the space.

It was a supermarket car park, free parking for 2 hours.

He’s a cockwomble Op, don’t let him have any more headspace!

Willowkins · 28/08/2022 18:55

I drive an EV and haven't come across this as part of the etiquette. The only thing I can think is that it's easier to nip into the EV charging space when it becomes free if you're literally next in line. No need to be rude though.

HouseOfWaffles · 28/08/2022 21:52

I needed to charge yesterday and some twat in a BMW was parked in the EV space, not charging and I had to park in the thankfully empty ordinary space next to it.

Usually each charger has two spaces so it isn't an issue.

It won't be long until there is a murder over car charging.

There are two spaces that have an EV charger each. They are the two spaces on the end of a row of about 10 spaces. So the 3rd space, where I had parked has no EV charger. I can kind of see his point in that the charger lead would stretch over to space 3 but in the absence of a charger or any signs then I really can't see that I was at fault.

saraclara · 28/08/2022 22:01

There was no sign to say it was for EV cars, therefore it wasn't for EV cars, it was for anyone. He was being ridiculous.

HouseOfWaffles · 28/08/2022 22:01

No, I don't t think you were at fault.

FlyingFlamingo · 28/08/2022 22:03

You weren’t at fault. If the space isn’t marked as an EV space it’s for anyone, if there are more charging points than there are spaces for then he needs to take that up with the car park/charging company.

Xiaoxiong · 28/08/2022 22:12

I have an EV, I wouldn't park immediately next to an EV space if I wasn't charging unless no other spaces were available because you can often stretch the cables over - especially if it's one of the ones where you can plug your own cable in. But EVs certainly don't own the adjacent spaces.

He's being a tosser.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 28/08/2022 22:18

I have an EV. He’s making it up, nobody else does this unless the space happens to be free!

You did nothing wrong.

Zeus44 · 28/08/2022 22:53

Tell him to F off. Entitled so so.

Every space unless designated EV or disabled is for anyone.

Though sadly I see £120k range rovers and Ford Rangers always parked in disabled spaces and always think to myself really?

butterfly990 · 28/08/2022 23:20

Just a quick point. This is a parking thread and there is no diagram. Is that not illegal in itself. 🤔😆

ShelfyMcShelfface · 28/08/2022 23:39

I don't think he would have spoken to a big burly man the way he spoke to me. A single female with a toddler in tow. I'm wondering if it was just bullying, given all the responses on here.

He sounds like an utter twat. Please ignore people like him. Perhaps you could point out that it takes twice as much energy to produce his crappy car and if he is really serious about the environment to get on his bloody bike. Job done.

TheGirlWhoLived · 28/08/2022 23:43

“Well I assume that’s something you will have to take up with x supermarket” breezy smile, walk off. Don’t allow these people more brain space than that as you are not, even a little bit, at fault
