How on earth do I stop cutting myself whilst shaving my legs?

I’ve tried using loads of shaving foam, a new razor, exfoliating before… yet still I always end up with loads of cuts over my legs (I think I am basically shaving the little cuts that the previous shave made which causes the bleeding)… it’s getting me down as my legs are just full of small cuts and grazes and ingrown hairs. I’ve got sensitive skin so I don’t want to go down the waxing route!

What am I doing wrong??

Try keeping the blade against your skin (minimum pressure) going up and down.

Go across bony shin not vertical.

Do you shave in the bath or the shower? I find I only cut myself while shaving in the shower. I seem to get more goosebumps in the shower and am cutting them. In the bath I feel warmer and it doesn't happen.

dementedpixie · 28/08/2022 16:18

What sort of razor is it?
I like the olay ones with the soap bars. Only my knees are in danger of getting cut as they are a bit bony. Otherwise I never get cuts

Dadaya · 28/08/2022 16:19

New razors are worse for cutting you imo. Once they’ve worn in a bit they’re not as sharp and they still remove hair but don’t cut skin.

gingertoast · 28/08/2022 16:20

I find cheap bic type razors are the worst for this. My DP's expensive triple bladed thing that he leaves in the shower works a treat

pastaandpesto · 28/08/2022 16:20

I've only ever cut myself with a cheap disposable razor. What are you using?

Arenanewbie · 28/08/2022 16:21

I use in shower Veet cream for sensitive skin on legs and bikini line, works well and no reaction.

GetOffTheRoof · 28/08/2022 16:22

What razors are you using?

I've got scars all over my legs from years of cheap "lady" razors. I was really bad at it.

Since I switched to more expensive men's ones, I've not cut myself once. I'm currently using a Wilkinson Sword 5 blade razor. Lasts months for legs and underarms per razor head as it stays beautifully sharp.

Good exfoliation in the shower and do your legs as the last thing so they've had a good soaking. I don't use anything on my skin except water (allergies) and apply aloe vera gel when I get out.

They were the cheap ones I think which I know didn’t help. But now my legs have come out in lots of red bumpy spots.

how long should I wait to shave after exfoliating? I did it today straight after…

Use hair conditioner instead of any foam or soap.

Cheeselog · 28/08/2022 22:46

Get a better razor and only use them when they’re sharp. I’ve cut myself way more with cheap disposables than with my safety razor because when it’s blunt you end up pressing harder and going over the same patch more times. A fresh blade on the safety razor means only needing a quick once-over. I don’t use shaving foam either, just soap. And rinse the blade after each few strokes.

Crochetandcoke · 28/08/2022 22:59

Wax

Alldelicious · 28/08/2022 23:01

Wilkinson Sword Lady Protector! They have little wires over the blade. Seem to get just as close but practically impossible to cut yourself

UpsideDownDownsideUp · 28/08/2022 23:06

I find the mens ones better gillette mach3. So i just use dhs.

DorritLittle · 28/08/2022 23:13

I have fair, sensitive skin prone ro redness and I get mine waxed. It's fine.

BrownOwlknowsbest · 28/08/2022 23:16

Invest in an electric shaver perhaps?

KateBushyTail · 28/08/2022 23:18

Mens razors!

Snugglemonkey · 28/08/2022 23:21

I use a Venus razor with a wee strip on it and no foam or anything. Never any cuts.

abovedecknotbelow · 28/08/2022 23:21

Get a 'mens' triple blade. I haven't cut myself since I was teenager using cheapo Bic razors. Use shaving foam or conditioner. Don't use a blunt one.

largeprintagathachristie · 28/08/2022 23:23

For me, in the bath, not the shower. And use soap not shaving foam.

PicturesOfDogs · 28/08/2022 23:25

Cheap hair conditioner and mens razors!
I’ve subscribed to Estrid and they send me new blades every so often and they give a pretty good shave I’ve found, and not massively expensive

PicturesOfDogs · 28/08/2022 23:28

I’ve just checked and it was £8 for starter kit which comes with the actual stick bit and two blades and wall mount, and then £10 every two months for four blades. Gives a nice shave

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/08/2022 23:29

Switch to a Philips rotary shaver and use a bath/shower gel that's designed to protect the skin barrier (like Sanex), followed by moisturising with an emollient. Within a couple of weeks, you'll have silky soft skin, no more ingrowns and smooth legs.

WtoB · 28/08/2022 23:31

I dry shave them with a cheap throw away razor and never cut myself

Maybe i have rhino skin 😂

cherrypiepie · 28/08/2022 23:33

I have never cut myself with a Venus razor and have used them since they came out 20 years ago.

The cheap one are so awful! You are bound to rip you skin to shreds!!

The Venus do a disposable one now too. One will last a long time
Several weeks
