What happens at a bikini wax appointment?

I'd like to book in for a wax, what do you wear when you go? How does it work? Sorry if it sounds like a silly question.

I regularly get my bikini line waxed and I just wear a thong which is moved to allow waxing. I have been in some salons where they give out paper pants but it usually depends.

EarringsandLipstick · 28/08/2022 08:27

Usually they will provide disposable underwear.

Depending on the bikini wax you choose, different amounts of hair will be removed.

You can choose to have a standard wax, where only the hair outside the underwear is removed, an extended bikini, usually leaving a central area of hair, but all other hair including at your bum will be removed, or everything off (you won't wear underwear).

Don't worry as the beautician will know exactly & can answer questions, explain what you should do.

quirkyquerty · 28/08/2022 08:41

Okay thank you. So no need to feel uncomfortable stripping off. I know that I will, though lol. Last question, how painful is it?

Usually you go into the treatment room , and they will offer you some paper pants explain to undress from the waist down put on the pants and they will have a towel or two on the bed to cover your modesty, they will leave while you get ready and a few minutes later will return.

I would explain what you would like, ie a tidy up around the edges or the whole thing etc etc they will know and probably check in with you on how much more you would like taking off if you're not going all off.

Afterwards they will put on some after wax lotion, and leave while you get dressed again and all done!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/08/2022 08:47

You’ll be asked to remove your trousers, keep underwear on. Socks on, top on.
Get onto waxing couch and relax. The Therapist will tell you what to do, but really they will ask you to move your leg if required. All you need to do is say how high you want the hair removed. They will do the rest.

Make sure your hair is at least a cm long. Too short and it won’t all come out. DONT have a hot bath, shower, swim or sunbathe after the treatment for at least 12 hrs.

They might apply a pre-wax oil or powder before the waxing and will apply a cream afterwards to remove any sticky bits and soothe the skin. It will be red for a bit afterwards.

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 28/08/2022 08:49

I've only had a couple in my life but the first was a high bikini wax, so all the outer hair removed that would come out of your knickers and it just extends abit more. This one wasn't too bad at all.
I then had a Hollywood and my god I nearly cried 🤣 it hurt in certain parts more but I won't lie it was painful. But the results were great !!

I'm sure the more you have it done the more of a tolerance to the pain you would build up. And as of course it depends on the amount of hair you want off

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 28/08/2022 08:50

I've had waxes for about 15 years. It depends on a few things.

The type of wax you book, eg is it a bikini wax - you will wear pants as this isn't as "up there." Whereas for a Brazilian you might not wear any pants.

You are given a sheet to cover your stomach.

Then it depends on if you have hot wax which is a thick layer that is put on wait few moments then pulled off or strip wax which is a layer of wax, then paper over then pulled off.

I would only ever have hot wax for an intimate area.

Pain wise.... Yes I mean it's not comfortable and it depends on the thickness of your hair. You could take a paracetamol before and don't time it before your period.

Hope that helps

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 28/08/2022 08:51

If you have a Brazilian, you have to do some pretty funny positions, with your knees up so they can do your butt hole ☺️

I don't find it painful really, but I'm going for waxes for about 25 years now. It's easier if the hair isn't too long.

I suspect the first one might feel painful - but easier after that. Some people take paracetamol before it. The skill of the beautician is very important - try to get a recommendation from someone you trust. Strips are a bit more painful than using the wax directly - but that depends too.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 28/08/2022 08:58

Pain is so subjective. It’s very quick, so however painful you find it it’s over very soon, and the more you have it done the quicker and easier it is. The further in the more the sting. Hot wax is better than strips.

My therapist does her own Hollywood 😳

tealandteal · 28/08/2022 09:07

When I have been for a standard bikini wax, I have worn old pants as sometimes they say keep them on and even if you don’t then they can get wax on them. They usually offer the choice of paper pants, but if I am having a Brazilian/Hollywood I just go for leaving everything off as they see it anyway.

They will give you a towel and step out of the room, come back in when you are ready. They will wipe down the area to remove any moisturiser/oils and check how much you want off. Are you having hot or warm wax? After the waxing they will put on an after wax lotion and they usually check if you’re happy with the amount taken off. Then they leave the room so you can get dressed.

It does sting a little but it fades very quickly especially if you follow the aftercare instructions, no swimming etc.

So I have a 4 month old and not even looked down there in about a year 😂

If I went in without 'trimming' is that a no no ... or would they prefer that over me trying to trim it before the wax

Goldmember · 28/08/2022 09:34

My waxer is fab, chats constantly throughout to distract from the fact that I'm naked from waist down. The most undignified position is all fours. I've only been going for a year, starting with bikini, then Brazilian, now get Hollywood, just easier all off.

AnnaMagnani · 28/08/2022 09:34

They would not mind if you have trimmed or not.

However if your hair is really long it might be more painful.

IPL - never have to wax again!

As Anna said, a bit less painful if you trim the hairs but they won't mind at all.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 28/08/2022 09:42

I went last week and I hadn't had time to trim so they were long ish therapist said better not to trim as they sometimes end up too short or different lengths and that makes it harder for them to wax

ouch321 · 28/08/2022 09:43

2 questions....

Doesn't it bother you that you have to wait for two(?) Wweeks before you can go again, so you have to be hairy for two weeks and can't wear skirts or shorts or vest tops etc in that time while you wait for next visit.

Also how much do you pay per visit assuming underarm, leg and personal bits?

20viona · 28/08/2022 09:50

Iv been having a Hollywood for 5 years now. I wear a thong and the beautician moves it around and I hold it in certain positions for a slight bit of dignity 😂

They might actually complain if you have trimmed with a battery trimmer and the hairs are a bit short.

quirkyquerty · 28/08/2022 18:44

Thank you this is all v v helpful. Can I ask a final question- is everyone who goes very slim? I'm amid sized lady and can't shake the feeling of embarrassment!!

Not sure what you mean about two weeks? You mean before you go back for it done again? I didn't need to go back for seven weeks.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 28/08/2022 18:53

I went when I was 9 months pregnant with the hugest bump you've ever seen.

Trust me they won't be phased at all.

What kind of salon is it?

VeridicalVagabond · 28/08/2022 18:55

My best friend is an intimate waxer and she has seen it all, nothing to be embarrassed about babe! Women of all shapes and sizes get their bits waxed and she's never batted an eye at a one - they're usually very good at making you feel comfortable and at ease. She regularly does my Hollywood and that's everything out bumhole and all, and she's never once made me feel uncomfortable or judged. They're professionals!

Phloxgirl · 28/08/2022 19:13

Just saying hello to everyone. I am new to Mumsnet. I'm probably older than many people on here but young in outlook. Looking forward to seeing your side of life. I think hearing the younger person's take on contemporary life could help me to understand how life is for my teenage and adult grandchildren.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/08/2022 20:13

"I didn't need to go back for seven weeks."

Is that because you're used to it?
I used to get just the edges done. The waxing place said to wait a month until next time, but I basically had one or two days of being red and sore and then was hairy again within a week so I decided waxing was obviously a huge con.
I presume it works better if you've done it for a long time.
