A spider thread upon request of Artemis the Jumping spider

I’ve had a few people request so here we go. This is Artemis. Commonly known as Artie since we discovered he was a boy.

He’s getting on in age now. I got him in November and he was hatched around September. Males live to about a year old. When he passes, I am going to get a female as they generally live longer and are slightly bigger

The first picture is when I first got him. He was teeny tiny. The last picture with the blue green fangs is the latest

Awww, he's a cutie.

froufroulala · 27/08/2022 21:39

I have a real fear of spiders so why do I think he's so cute! Where do you keep him?

Brokenandstressed · 27/08/2022 21:39

Oh he is so lovely. Where did you get him?

Do you follow Ophelia, the monster on Facebook? They are a jumping spider breeder who has every colour and type they are adorable.

Interested in this thread?

I do follow Ophelia yes.

He’s kept in a smoothie cup in the kitchen under a bright LED light.

I got him from a breeder called Magick Morphs. Paris, the woman who runs it, is very helpful and has some beautiful specimens.

I got over my fear of spiders by falling in love with jumping spiders because they are SO. CUTE!

Stick with it, maybe you’ll be like me 😆

Flowerhorn · 27/08/2022 21:44

He is very cute. How jumpy is he and what do you feed him?

Hugasauras · 27/08/2022 21:45

He is incredibly cute!!! And tiny!

Soubriquet · 27/08/2022 21:46

He’s actually incredibly shy, so I don’t get to handle him. This means I don’t actually get to see him jump either. He prefers to just lay in his hammock.

He can be fed on locusts, grasshoppers, meal worms, crickets, blue bottle flies, wax worms or roaches.

He just finished off a batch of locusts so now I have blue bottle casters in. Just waiting for them to hatch and then he will eat those

He is gorgeous.

I wish I could feel the same about the behemoth that is somewhere in the bedroom.

I know I saw it. And then I didn’t.

Soubriquet · 27/08/2022 21:50

Yeah I’m not so keen on the big ones either.

lucysmam · 27/08/2022 21:56

I think you posted pics of him when you first got him? His fangs are a brilliant colour!

Dd2's keen on a jumping spider to live alongside her mantis - although not visible to each other, that'd just be torment for both of them.

Does his home need much in the way of maintenance? Could we see a pic of it?

SuperlativeOxymoron · 27/08/2022 21:59

He is so cute, please can we see his hammock? It sounds so cool!

I'm showing DH photos of jumping spiders now in the hope he'll let me have one, I think it'll be a negative, he's scared of spiders, but DS is on side!!!!

Soubriquet · 27/08/2022 22:08

I’ll take some photos tomorrow of his hammock and enclosure. It’s actually really basic. You can get some really nice ones but we’ve gone for simple for now.

My dh is terrified of spiders but even these guys don’t bother him

Truly the vilest of pets ( IMHO)
That being said, he clearly brings you much joy and so, for that reason alone, I think he's lovely.
And yes, to a hammock pic!

Deathraystare · 28/08/2022 15:37

Awww what a sweetie! Though if he was a common house spider I would not be thinking that!.

Soubriquet · 28/08/2022 15:43

This is his house and a couple more photos of him

Does he ever make a run, or a jump, for it?

Soubriquet · 28/08/2022 16:29

No! Though today was the first time I actually saw him jump. You know when he’s going to jump as he waves his front legs like mad. Then he lays down an anchor and jumps. So you can see where he’s gone because there’s a very fine line of webbing.

SuperlativeOxymoron · 28/08/2022 16:48

Awww!! I didn't realise how bright the green really was. I thought the images on Google were brightened!!

Soubriquet · 28/08/2022 16:51

Nope!!!! So bright. Ive even seen some females have a rainbow

lucysmam · 28/08/2022 18:47

Thanks @Soubriquet, his house is similar to the cup dd's mantis lived in when we got her. Will he outgrow it? We're about to start looking for a bigger house for Pancake.

We know Pancake's about to jump because she sort of winds up her back end. She's like lightening when she jumps or runs & quite intimidates me if she's in the mood to move!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 28/08/2022 18:56

I have a real, proper, irrational and uncontrollable fear of spiders. I can't control my reaction to just GTFOT when I see one.

But Artemis, he's cute. I'd be worried he'd get hurt being so tiny. Do you make sure he's always in his cup and not able to get out when you're feeding etc?

Soubriquet · 28/08/2022 18:58

They can live their life in a smoothie cup but if they are more active, it’s always best to get something bigger.

I’ve got my eye on this

Yes. He doesn’t normally come out anyway. Like I said, he’s normally very shy.

Gorgeous spider! I got my PhD in arachnology so I'll be favouriting this post :).

Do you mate them?

I mostly keep ants now but a few spiders.
