Any good Spanish-language Netflix/prime series for A level students?

DS is about to start Spanish A level. I think it would be great if she could get into some Spanish language tv shows, watching with English subtitles on to start with, to get her ear in. Productions from Spain probably better than South American, but I guess either would help.

Any suggestions? For info she is more into political/drama/type stuff rather than totally mad soaps, but any suggestions welcome.

The obvious one is
Money Heist which is rather good

Btw she has done Spanish gcse (got a star - 20 marks above the grade boundary!) so has a good basic grasp of the language

Watching with subtitles
is a great start btw you can really pick up key phrases and just the way the Spanish talk

Pasión de Gavilanes. South American telenovela and they speak slowly I find

It's a bit silly and over the top but good language practice

It’s on Netflix. Slightly bonkers heist thriller.

Money Heist is a completely over-the-top melodrama about a bunch of criminals. It's very fun but also quite violent. Her knowledge of Spanish swearwords will certainly improve (mostly "puta de..." in front of anything). Might want to check it's her cup of tea!

Frazzled2207 · 27/08/2022 15:49

ps not sure netflix does this but I also find watching English dramas with Spanish subtitles useful too.

Ducksurprise · 27/08/2022 15:50

You can choose what language is played on Netflix, I have been watching programs I know well in English in Greek. Although I have no language skills so this maybe rubbish advice

Delphigirl · 27/08/2022 15:53

Sounds just her cup of tea, sadly 🤣 @photodad!
will also get her to look at Pasión de Gavilanes, thanks @Yubgftr

yes I think she has done quite a lot of that - watching in English with Spanish subtitles - which she has found helpful for spelling and sentence construction.
She has also put her whole apple world into Spanish so her phone and laptop (including Siri) speak to her in Spanish!

I've remembered that a friend of mine (a Spanish speaker) also recommended "Cable Girls" (Netflix) which is a drama about a group of female friends in 1920s Spain and is apparently excellent. Haven't got around to watching it myself yet!

Delphigirl · 27/08/2022 15:55

Ha ha @Ducksurprise i found watching films in English but subtitled in Greek (in cinemas in Greece) really excellent for increasing my reading speed and vocabulary. Haven’t tried doing it the other way around - good idea!

Don't discount Latin Spanish programmes. The Spanish is often slower & far easier to decipher!

Delphigirl · 27/08/2022 15:56

Ooh thanks @PhotoDad will look!

We are obsessively watching Pablo Escobar - El Patron del Mal at the moment! I haven’t done much with my Spanish since my own A’ levels but have really got back into it since watching this. Colombian obviously, but I wouldn’t be put off by that (quite gathering reverse actually, although I understand why you mention that) and it’s fun picking up some local slang. I’ve learnt quite a bit about Colombian politics and history as it’s historically accurate on the key events.

JohnsShirt · 27/08/2022 15:58

Elite is a teen drama with a crime running through each of the five series.

countdowntonap · 27/08/2022 15:59

All on Spanish and on Netflix:

Criminal is brilliant! www.netflix.com/gb/title/81020523

I also recently enjoyed Intimacy. m.youtube.com/watch?v=9pZrPauX_WM

Also watched The Innocent which had a great twist at the end. m.youtube.com/watch?v=LhERIj0ddXI

Toy Boy was a light hearted watch last year 😂 www.netflix.com/gb/title/81036622

Delphigirl · 27/08/2022 16:01

Oh my god this is all fantastic, thank you everyone. Should get her to the end of lower sixth at least! Any more? I’m def going to be watching some too… 😁

I'm placemarking as I've been thinking I really should start watching some more stuff in Spanish

StellaAndCrow · 27/08/2022 16:14

If you change the language settings on your Netflix account to Spanish, you can get Spanish subtitles on most shows. I found it helpful to watch something easy and enjoyable with the sound in English and subtitles in Spanish (e.g. Downton Abbey :)

BocaChica · 27/08/2022 16:22

Searching YT with

'peliculas completas en español'

turns up all sorts. Some english subtitled, some spanish subtitled, some not subtitled.

Spanish subs better than english subs for me

Any Pedro Almodóvar film I would have thought, though some are 18s.
The Sea Inside is good and got a best foreign language Oscar.
