Can you help me find a 1-week self-catering holiday for two, next to an accessible beach in September - South Coast/Gower? Shooting for the moon?

I've been disabled --mainly bedbound- for 9 years & I really, really want to see the sea!

I'm a bit better this year & dreaming of sitting in bed/on balcony/patio looking out at the sea. I might crash with the travel, but hopefully I could even get onto a beach. I have a wheelchair for very bad days, but obviously access might be an issue with so many cliffs/steps.

I've been researching when I have energy. It's sooo booked up everywhere & I'm shocked at the prices. Preferably no caravan holidays, bad experiences Sad

Maybe hotels could work at a stretch? Last minute bookings? We're flexible.

Any ideas please lovely MN'ers?

This. But 900 quid for a week. You could call and maybe get a discount?

SweetFannyAdamsDog · 26/08/2022 17:42

Budget?

SeasideSuzie · 26/08/2022 17:48

Thank you @idonotmind I will start researching! Smile

It looks quite far from the sea, but maybe I can't get as close as I'd like.

@SweetFannyAdamsDog

I used to be a camper & these prices are scaring me Grin

Budget maybe up to £1,000, so that I'm not trapped in some rancid dump?

Beautiful area.

Bank Farm Horton on Gower - disclaimer, I’ve never been there but a friend who is wheelchair bound goes regularly and she and her family love it there.

80sMum · 26/08/2022 17:56

Not Gower, but Pembrokeshire Coast.
This one is a Beachfront House and it looks lovely. It's available in September, but expensive.
Beachfront properties always cost more.

SeasideSuzie · 26/08/2022 18:03

Ah, you're all so lovely. I can't keep up! Grin

Would you consider Swansea OP? The bay runs round to Mumbles with easy wise path access for wheelchair. Might be cheaper

80sMum · 26/08/2022 18:13

This one in Sandwich, Kent, is also available in September and has its own private access to the beach.

Probably not, this time. I love Swansea too, but I live in a busy place and hoped to be somewhere much more peaceful for this trip. If I make it.

Noise is quite tiring, so hoping to avoid Holiday Park type places too.

I know what you mean though, access would be much better!

I wouldn't necessarily recommend The Gower op. Whilst beautiful, it's pretty rural and wild - lanes without footpaths (that I can remember) that I think could be tricky to navigate.

My suggestion of location is Pembrokeshire. Its completely beautiful and looking at the link below is pretty geared up for wheelchair use. Tenby is a favourite of ours.

I hope you find somewhere 😀

Pembrokeshire is amazing!!! That view from the lounge is just awesome isn't it!

I just can't see myself managing to travel that far. Not without spending the rest of the week in bed recovering Grin

Crest Holidays Newquay. WhatsApp them for a deal. No sea view but very close to Towan Beach which is accessible.

DorritLittle · 26/08/2022 18:24

I just stayed in the Gower. Oxwich beach is accessible with a good car park but there were very narrow roads down to the beach. It's all very hilly. Rhossili beach is a no go with a wheelchair IMO.

I second the Tenby area a bit further round.

RockAndRollerskate · 26/08/2022 18:27

Port Eynon on Gower has disabled parking right by the beach so you can even just sit in/near your car to see the sea - a lot of people do that

gogohmm · 26/08/2022 18:33

Some beaches now have beach wheelchairs

www.disability-grants.org/beach-wheelchairs-for-hire.html

There's Welsh options.

My very incapacitated friend always goes to a hotel in sidmouth in Devon who arrange a hoist and carers for her.

DorritLittle · 26/08/2022 18:34

Yeah I was trying to remember the name but Port Eynon was the easiest beach I saw in terms of actually getting to/on it. Lovely beach too.

Thank you all for your help! So useful to hear your suggestions.

@RockAndRollerskate That sounds perfect! I'm not going to have masses of energy to visit lots of places, much as I'd like. Sitting in the car by the sea might be as good as it gets; Grin

@gogohmm Yes I just saw that there's lots of Pembrokeshire beach wheelchairs! Brilliant idea.

I'm so sorry your friend is so incapacitated Sad It's wonderful that there's options around to help her. Sidmouth is lovely too.

When I'm at my most incapacitated, I just couldn't move from bed or bare to be touched, so that kind of makes it a bit easier.

Our local beach has beach wheelchairs for hire. It's in Scotland so no good for you, but we often hire a wheelchair for a relative and we can push him right into the sea to get his feet wet. It's a great service. I'm going to volunteer with them next summer.
I hope someone can recommend a beach near where you want to go with wheelchairs.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 26/08/2022 19:06

Not a sea view but a lake view here

Thank you so much @User287264. It's a fabulous idea isn't it. Lovely place to volunteer!

You don't realise how important access is, until you lose your mobility & your life.
