Has anyone taken Propranolol for anxiety?

I posted this in another topic but I don't think it's too active over there, so I hope it's okay to post on here too!

Doctor has prescribed 10mg for me to take 3 times a day.

I've heard if you take it every day your body gets used to it in the long term so you don't feel the effects of it any more. Is this true?

I'm also having very vivid nightmares every night, do these stop after a while?

Please let me know any of your personal experiences!

Not for anxiety but for heart palpitations when I had an over active thyroid and migraines. I couldn’t take them. Stopped the migraines which was amazing but I had horrendous nightmares.

I take them ad hoc for stressful events where I need not to have a panic attack. No side effects for me but perhaps as I don’t use them that often.

I've taken them for years - never had any side effects apart from slight wheezing but again I only take them for specific events such as flying.

I take one every morning (prescribed 3 a day but find it's "too much"). I find it really helpful for my anxiety, occasionally if I'm having a bad day or experiencing something unusual then I will have a second tablet.

Funnily enough I've not had any for a few days as I forgot to order my prescription and I've been much more alert and energetic, quite impressed with myself, but if you had asked me before I would have said they didn't cause me to become groggy. Live and learn.

I take one every morning for anxiety. I’ve been on it about 18 months I think. I’ve never had nightmares but more vivid dreams. Only get them sometimes though. I do feel quite groggy and tired on them all the time. I wouldn’t say the impact on the anxiety is wearing off though.

I was on them for 3 years primarily as a migraine preventative but I found they were excellent at managing anxiety and making me feel calm and able to cope, even though that wasn't why I went on them.

For the dreams, they recommend you don't take them at bedtime, it says that on the leaflet, so try and take your last one a bit earlier in the evening, it's a side effect that soon stops.

I eventually came off them as I went on hrt but still have several left and I might slip one if I have something coming up that worries me. They work really well!

I take 10mg to help control my anxiety. Might take 2 in 24hrs if I’m struggling with insomnia anxiety. I find it very helpful
I was originally prescribed a much higher dose - 120mg across a day! I slowly weaned down as I felt better. I tried not to take the last dose too late in the day. As it did affect my dreams.
I’d give it some time then maybe see about reducing the dose.

That's interesting as I got prescribed them ages ago for anxiety but I mostly relied on low dose diazepam so never took them and they've been in my drawer. Took a half before a job interview and I've had a slight wheezy cough since. Maybe it was to do with that?

PSKeyboardwarrior · 24/08/2022 19:20

My tablets are 40mg each but I bite it in half.

Leafblow · 24/08/2022 19:26

I have been on them for a few years for chronic headaches,
I had absolutely insane dreams for about six months, there were lucid dreams, horrible viseral nightmares, dreams that would just be entirely flashbacks and some that Were so vivid and realistic but so boring- spent hours dreaming about reading my year 10 poetry anthology and it was so dull.
It was rubbish and I felt like my brain didn't shut off at all for 6 months.
Then it stopped, the medication still works okay but the dreams went away.

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 24/08/2022 19:29

I take them for migraines and had nightmares for a while at the beginning so take them an. If I ever miss a day and take them the next day, I can have nightmares and can feel dizzy.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 24/08/2022 19:41

No side effects and I've always had crazy dreams so can't answer that one

BluesandClues · 24/08/2022 19:43

I take them for anxiety at bedtime, never had any vivid dreams. Mind you I’m on a bucket of meds so side effects could be from any number of things.
