Norethisterone to delay period

I'm due to start taking norethisterone tomorrow to delay my period during my upcoming holiday.

I've already got my usual pmt symptoms, bloating, irritability, insomnia and depression. Obviously these usually stop when, or shortly after my period starts. Am I going to feel like this the whole time I'm taking the tablets or will the pmt subside? Not sure I can cope with a week of PMT while I'm supposed to be enjoying myself on holiday. I think I'd rather have the period.

Anyone have any experience of this or advice? Thanks.

I mean... Its basically progesterone so definitely makes you feel a bit premenstrual! I take it as part of fertility treatment and dislike it cause it basically makes the day before your period last 10 days. Not sure I'd bother

I use it to delay my period sometimes for special events - but I'm afraid I'm going to agree with the PP; I do tend to feel bloated & a bit pre-menstrual the whole time I'm on it. I'm fortunate that my pre-menstrual symptoms are generally not too bad, but if you suffer with lots of symptoms, it might be more trouble than it's worth? I tend to try and limit it to 3/4 days max if I do take it.

I used it on holiday and my mood swings were horrendous. Couldn't stop crying and getting angry at everybody. Will never take it again

Rats I thought you'd say that.

I'm a cow if I take it. Wouldn't take it again for holidays etc, last time it was to delay period for a procedure and i was miserable! I'd much prefer a period on holiday than the black cloud over my head for a week!!!

Depends how difficult your periods are to manage I guess, it's a toss up between which you can manage better and is going to affect your holiday least! For me, I can't go swimming/hot tub etc when I'm on my period, so it's sometimes worth putting up with the pmt.

I don't like using tampons, I prefer pads but plan to be in the pool a lot.
I can use tampons though, it's just a preference so I think I'll just suck it up. I wish I'd thought about this before wasting my money.

That said, I feel almost like I'm due to come on early. Getting a few cramps. Which would be great, my periods only last a few days and we don't go away until Saturday 🤞🏻

Yeah tried once, never again. If I have a clash with periods/holiday I use transamic acid. Literally reduces the blood loss/days significantly.

OP - where did you get it from? I cannot get any in the UK, it seems to be totally out of stock everywhere.

And no, it doesn't really get rid of the PMT symptoms. I'm older and get really heavy periods that aren't compatible with being outdoors and away for a loo for more than an hour (and especially not on a beach).

dribblewibble · 24/08/2022 07:12

Yeah same as everyone else. I took it once for a holiday and I felt horrible. Never took it again

WhosthatGirlJess · 24/08/2022 07:44

I've taken it a few times in this past year and honestly not had any symptoms like this, but I don't usually get much PMT except bloating and an odd twinge. The only issue for me after the second time of using it was a really heavy period afterwards and I then got a second lighter period a few days after the heavy one that was maybe 3 days. No issues after that.

I ran out before my holiday and couldn't get any more, so bought some hanna contraceptive pills. I was at the tail end of my period on the flight but by day 2 of taking the pill it had totally stopped thank goodness. Usually the 'end' of my period is about 5-6 days of annoying unpredictable spotting so I think the hanna pill helped with that. Could you maybe try that OP?

To the previous poster who was asking I got my last 2 lots from random online places like pharmica and maybe something like chemist direct. I basically just googled for ages til I found some in stock. All the main pharmacies like Lloyds and Boots never seem to have any stock.
