Just wondered what you think of it and whether you have any views on which model to get (memory etc)?

I have - one of the 24" models. I am sold on Mac/Macbooks because I've used them for so long, I hate using a Windows PC. One thing that disappointed me about my iMac is that I can only attach one monitor whereas my work Windows laptop would run with three screens. My fault for not checking.

expandabandband · 22/08/2022 16:00

Yes, have had a succession of them for years and would not have anything else.

As for what to get, very much depends on what you would use it for.

Also worth knowing that a new model is due quite soon, so either wait for that or get a one year old one second hand / refurbished as a new one will not hold its value.

I've got a 24" 2021 iMac.

It's brilliant. Does everything I (or the teen) need it to do and looks really great too.

I have a Retina 4k 21.5 inch 2017 iMac (or so it tells me) and I can attach at least one additional screen to it - never tried to attach more. I far prefer the way it looks and feels to my work PC but I can't think it's anything rational and very likely not worth the price premium. But I'm apple through and through - I have a work Samsung phone and can hardly work out how to answer the damn thing.

Don’t have an iMac but do have several other macs. Latest addition has been an m1 Mac mini and it’s pretty slick- mindbendingly fast for the money, it was £700. Personally prefer the separate monitor idea, but that’s just my preference. Might save some money doing it this way.

Thanks, everyone.

I have a 2021 iMac. Love it. I use it for Affinity programs (a poor woman's Adobe) and looks the business.

SergeiL · 22/08/2022 16:31

If you’ve never used one before and don’t have much time to learn, I would probably steer clear. I can see that they are good, but they are VERY different to Windows. I use them a bit for photography editing but I find them very counter intuitive.

WendyAndDave · 22/08/2022 17:47

I use a MacBook so am assuming it will be straightforward. Presumably it’s easy to work on a document on my MacBook away from home and on the iMac at home?

Ahh if you already use a MacBook, you will be fine. I think stuff gets saved to the cloud so you should be able to use on any device.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/08/2022 11:16

Look for a reconditioned one on the Apple website if you want to save some money . We got one and saved us loads. Comes as new with same guarantee just the motherboard thingy inside which you can't see anyway is reconditioned, everything else is new.

I have a 27" iMac, which replaced a 15 year old iMac. I love it and wouldn't dream of having anything else. 3GH processor and 8GB memory (I don't have a clue what that means, though). Plus there's 1TB (whatever that is) storage.

WayneScott · 23/08/2022 11:20

BTW, I had Microsoft computers before that. The Mac is miles better. Microsoft is completely counter-intuitive. I have to use one at work, and I hate it.

SergeiL · 23/08/2022 11:25

Guess it’s what you are used to. I have been using Windows type computers for work for I guess 25+ years ??? I found the transition harder than I expected, given I consider myself quite tech savvy.

The trickiest thing I have found is using both the Apple Photos software alongside another photo editing software app. I can never seem to find photos in one app that I have edited in the other. The filing system just seems odd and that Finder thing bouncing around drives me insane! (I realise I am now sounding like a complete dinosaur!)

SergeiL · 23/08/2022 11:27

@mondaytosunday sorry go hijack but do you download photos via the Photos App or Infinity? I use the Photos App because it then syncs to my other devices but I wonder whether that is where I am going wrong?

Yes, your entire desktop and documents can be stored on iCloud so that everything is identical across two computers (or indeed more). This is how I live!
