What dishwasher tabs DON'T remove writing from cups?

BambinoBlue · 22/08/2022 15:05

Please tell me and then I will only buy those from now on.

At the moment, I buy whatever premium dishwasher tabs are on offer, but one of them (and I don't know which!) has removed ALL of the markings on my glass measuring jug. It now does not measure 😆 and is pretty useless as a measuring jug.

It's also removed the marks on the glass part of my coffee cafetière and random mug logos.

So what is safe? And I'll make sure I only buy those.

Are the items dishwasher safe?

Cheeselog · 22/08/2022 15:09

I use ecozone all-in-one ones (they are on the pricier side but periodically on offer on Ocado) and not had any issue with this.

MidnightMeltdown · 22/08/2022 15:10

So what is safe?

washing by hand 😂

Not everything is dishwasher proof - and this is the reason.

I use Aldi's ones - the Magnum premium ones. The only time they've ever had an effect on the lettering is if the item is not dishwasher safe - are you sure they have the dishwasher safe symbol on them?

SignOnTheWindow · 22/08/2022 15:11

How annoying!

I've had no issues with Fairy Platinum and we put mugs with writing in the dishwasher every day.

Heartbreaktuna · 22/08/2022 15:17

How hot are you running your dishwasher? I've only ever had this happen on 60degree+ washes. Plus it strips all the enamel off too.

Yes, all the items I wash are marked "dishwasher safe".

It's not been a problem until recently where clearly one of the brands I have bought have stripped off all the markings 🙈

Oooooh. Interesting. I shall check. I have changed the wash to a much shorter one - in order to save water and electricity. Perhaps that's it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you 😊

I will check them out on Ocado offers!

I did some research about this as we have this problem, and apparently its more to do with how hard or soft your water is than what brand of dishwasher tablet you use. All "all in one" type tablets will soften the water with salts, whereas soft water doesn't need that and so the water/ cleaner mix wears off the patterns. Or something like that.

Perhaps it's a process of elimination 😆

I shall mark those as "safe". Thank you x

The longer cycles are usually the eco ones, counter intuitively. They spend longer sloshing less hot water around and save energy that way.

I like your style. In all the things to research, this could become my specialist subject 😆

I have soft water. Which probably now disproves the theory as I think I had in my mind that hard water was the worst.

I use any old dishwasher tablets. I put all my cups in the dishwasher and I've never had any fading or writing come off. I've had some of my cups for two decades.

Oh no! That proves the theory then. So I should not buy the all in one tabs with soft water. Ahhhhh.

It doesn't answer how this suddenly happened recently, but that's v v helpful. Thank you!

Bring them round to my soft water household and I will soon have those long lasting markings faded to oblivion 😆

Not my Golden Jubilee cups!!!

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 22/08/2022 16:38

I have to descale my kettle every three days so it's swings and roundabouts.

Dammit. All my previous held theories are now being popped like little washing up liquid bubbles.

I may actually need to read the manual for the washing machine at this rate.

I will also need to plan ahead as at the moment I bung the thing on and bribe a passing teenager with skittles to empty it in an hour. My teens won't cope with a three hour lead in to the exciting chore of emptying the dishwasher.

I kept meaning to buy an Emma Bridgwater jubilee mug. In the end, I just bought an M&S biscuit tin instead. Good job there.

I've used the cheap and cheerful Waitrose own tabs for years without issue.

They did an online order swap for some fancy Finish ones a few weeks ago and loads of my glasses and mugs lost their prints.

Go cheap.

This was my downfall. Instead, I've been buying the stupidly expensive ones at half price. I need to go cheaper.

As I understand it ...some items are 'dishwasher safe' which just means that the item will cope with a dishwasher for a while.
'Dishwasher proof ' means that it's indestructible in a dishwasher.

Hardly anything is 'dishwasher proof' anymore as guarantees can't then be invoked.
