Imagine you were invited to someone's garden for tea and cake, and there were three types of cake on offer.

Which three cakes would be the perfect types to choose between?

Recipes welcome 😋

Lemon drizzle - Nigella
Brownies - Best ever brownies from the bbc good food website
Victoria sponge with raspberry jam, fresh raspberries and Italian buttercream

ehb102 · 22/08/2022 12:36

One classic - Victoria sponge perhaps, with cream or icing

One chocolate, preferably oil based with ganache. I'd swap for a carrot cake perhaps.

One for the people who don't like chocolate or icing. I do the Mary Berry lemon drizzle loaf and the Delicious ginger loaf. They are so easy I'd do two.

I’d offer

1 x simple. - another vote for classic Victoria sponge (or fresh scones)

1x fancy - the King of Cakes, Cherry Beet cake by Dan Leopard. Taste, texture, interesting looks, this cake has it all - amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/may/09/dan-lepard-cherry-beet-cake

1 x Chocolate cake. Almost anything by Nigella, but this one is YUM - www.nigella.com/recipes/chocolate-fudge-cake

God I love cake…

Carrot cake

ScootyAlan · 22/08/2022 14:05

Chocolate cake, lemon drizzle cake, some kind of light fruit cake.
But then I like cherry cake, Victoria sponge, coffee cake, tiffin, apple pie, too. Ithere any such thing as the wrong cake?

Coffee & Walnut (Delia)
Lemon Drizzle (Mary Berry)
Chocolate Guinness (Nigella)

Couldn't possibly choose between them so I'd have to have them all!

Ohh delicious, what time are you putting the kettle on?

Ilovedthe70s · 22/08/2022 14:43

Fruit cake, Delia’s last minute Christmas cake made with mincemeat is my go to (I use lots of rum in my version)
A lemon cake with lemon curd butter icing adapted from a recipe in a Mich Turner wedding cake book
Apple cake from a Dairy Diary approx 1980

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 22/08/2022 14:47

Am I picking my 3 favourites or the 3 to cover most peoples taste?

my 3, lemon drizzle, coffee and walnut, scone jam and clotted cream

to cover most people, chocolate, coffee and a light fruit cake

Mossstitch · 22/08/2022 14:52

Quality bakewell tart with proper ground almonds (no Mr kiplings allowed😝)
Maltezers tray bake (which is akin to rocky road with addition of maltezers)
Vanilla slices but if that doesn't count........ a lemon cake with duchy organic lemon curd inside and lemon icing on top please.
This is the wrong thread for me having just started a diet😭👋

Xiaoxiong · 22/08/2022 14:52

I would also do the spiced/fruit/chocolate route and do:
Spiced brown butter carrot cake
Plum upside down cake (or possibly lime poppyseed drizzle...so hard to decide...)
Chocolate stout cake

PuttingDownRoots · 22/08/2022 14:55

I'd have one as plain as possible as a safe option.

Chocolate cake

Something creamy

Blackdiame · 22/08/2022 15:11

Carrot cake, Victoria Sponge and Chocolate

CCW86 · 22/08/2022 15:16

An old school vanilla sprinkles tray bake cake! I took this to a bbq recently and it went down a storm. Not too sweet and made everyone feel a bit nostalgic

Also rich fudgey brownies and a lemon cake. I prefer to bring treats which are easy to eat if it’s not a proper sit down meal

Snugglemonkey · 22/08/2022 15:16

Lemon drizzle, Victoria sponge with raspberries or strawberries and red velvet.

AdoraBell · 22/08/2022 15:20

Victoria sponge with fruit instead of jam
Rich chocolate cake
Fruit cake or coffee cake

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/08/2022 15:32

Top ranking Victoria sponge with cream on the side

Lemon drizzle, sharp

Gingercake, strong, with a thin lemon icing

I could go on.

Eixample · 22/08/2022 15:42

If by ‘choose between’ you mean ‘have a slice of each’ then
coffee and walnut
chocolate
carrot

Rowen32 · 22/08/2022 16:27

Red velvet for the cake cake
Roulade for the cream lovers
Pie/tart or crumble for those who prefer more pastry type things without icing or cream :-)

nokitchen · 22/08/2022 16:54

Coffee and walnut
Victoria sponge with lemon curd not jam
A vanilla sponge with thick chocolate butter cream topped with milk chocolate

nokitchen · 22/08/2022 16:54

Ooh and a seed cake

Circumferences · 22/08/2022 17:31

Fantastic!

Amazed at how many times lemon drizzle came up in your replies I was thinking of that one but now it'll be definite.
