Cooking apples- ideas please

I have so many cooking apples! So far I’ve made chutney, apple pie, apple crumble, apple and blackberry jelly, apple jam.

My kids don’t like baked apples unfortunately.

I’ll make a cake at some point (any good recipes?) but what else can I do? Really need some ideas that use a lot of apples! Thank you.

You could freeze it and use it for that or to go with pork, it'nice with plain sponge and cream ss well

Wondering if you are my new neighbour- she has tonnes of cooking apples! If it is you, thank you for the bag you gave me over the fence! I’ve also spent today making chutneys and crumbles.
I came over to ask the same question, any ideas for things that will preserve them? Sadly my freezers are quite full (garlic, shallot and cherry tomato glut!).

Whippetquick · 21/08/2022 16:55

Queen lemon juice will prevent browning but obviously if not frozen will have limited life

Gingerwarthog · 21/08/2022 17:04

I've spent all day cooking apples into compote for be frozen. I had a glut too! Smile
They freeze really well and I then take the frozen apples out when needed and use them for crumbles, smoothies or to have with yoghurt, porridge etc.
I use Hugh Fearnley- Whittingstall's recipe online (lemon juice and golden granulated sugar plus cinnamon).
It's been a bumper year for apples!

Gingerwarthog · 21/08/2022 17:06

Also stewing the apples down uses a lot of them!
Good luck (scuttles back to kitchen)

woodhill · 21/08/2022 17:09

Yes I've just stewed some

Mumofnowgrownkids · 21/08/2022 17:11

Apple jam. Never seen it in the shops but we made jars of it one year and really enjoyed it. Then we moved so no more apples....

There's a good housekeeping cake, that has dried fruit and a layer of Apple and cheese in the middle. It's in one of their Aga books.

They keep quite well somewhere dry and cool. Just check every month.

Bonfire night toffee apple cake, I’ve been willing the apples on my tree to ripen just because of it

ahalfbakedidea.co.uk/2015/11/05/bonfire-night-toffee-apple-cake/

It doesn’t freeze badly either but it never lasts long enough to freeze at mine!

TitInATrance · 21/08/2022 17:58

Devon apple cake - any apple cake really, there are loads of different types.
Stew the apples and freeze them in pudding-sized portions.

woodhill · 21/08/2022 18:22

Some of my apples have bits in them and horrible brown marks

i know you’re mostly looking for recipes but no matter how much I make we have far far more than we can use. I also put a box out on our front wall with a help yourself sign and a few carrier bags and they always all go. I’ve noticed our nearest church has a community pantry now so will be take boxes in there too.

I haven't picked mine yet but always wrap some in paper and store in spare fridge (am
sure you could store in sealed box in garage).

I stew a lot and store in bags in freezer. If you let it coo then bag up and squash flat it's easy to freeze and takes less room.

Beautifulsunflowers · 21/08/2022 18:55

Pots of apple sauce freeze really well and are ideal for roast pork dishes.
Apple crumble cake - delicious
Carrot and apple cake - delicious
chop apples and blanch then freeze for crumbles and pies through the winter

calmlakes · 21/08/2022 19:39

Apple butter,
This isn't butter but a thick, spicy apple jam.
You can make it in a slow cooker.
