Sunday going great so far, I nearly missed the Ocado delivery man but awoken by his gentle tapping on the door.

I popped the kettle on and walked off, after DS4 shuffled off with the ipad, taking advantage of my stupor.

I go back to the kitchen 30 minutes later and it's soaked... I only left the lid opened and the fucker didn't stop boiling. Entire contents of the kettle all over the walls and units. One cupboard and door now rippled from its steam treatment.

Obligatory MN photo attached.

I need a new cupboard door don't I?

😬I don't have a solution sorry but v interested if there is one!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/08/2022 09:27

Take the door off. Say you wanted some shelves there anyway.

Littlemissprosecco · 21/08/2022 09:28

Try gently drying it with a hair dryer, not hot obviously

Littlemissprosecco · 21/08/2022 09:28

Warm, it may shrink back

That's not a bad suggestion! That might work as it's a narrow cupboard in between 2 bigger ones.

Great, I'll get the hairdryer out.

Insurance, they will use companies who can doncosmetic repairs on this.

Agadoodoododont · 21/08/2022 09:58

If you know where the unit is from they’ll usually supply a replacement. I splashed a base cupboard door with caustic soda and it was easy to replace.

PinkPanther50 · 21/08/2022 10:26

Hairdryer would be my first try. I left the lid up on the kettle at work once. It filled the kitchen and toilets and hall with steam that set the fire alarms off 😳😂

BlackWhiteRed · 21/08/2022 10:50

I once did this to my kitchen cupboards when I got over enthusiastic with my new steam cleaner, steamed the doors and one of them bubbled like this.

It did shrink back a bit once it cooled, so it looked better, but it was never perfect.

JustTheOneSwan · 21/08/2022 10:54

Ah bugger. No other advice but shelves.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 21/08/2022 11:03

I'd have tried a hairdryer on a low ish setting and once warm, smoothing it down with a soft white cloth.

own or rent? It won't be difficult to get a replacement white gloss door from wherever the kitchen was bought from. But there could be shading differences if you don't know the supplier, so I'd try to nail that down first.

if it's owned, then shelves or contrasting colour door are also options!!

that's your 3 fir the day, so hopefully the rest of the day will go more smoothly!

ps: I've just got a new kettle (online) one thing I didn't even think about checking was the bloidy lid - previous ones just lifted with your mr thumb. This stupid (but pretty) one has a lid you have to take right off to fill it. Fucking stupid design!! I foresee me doing the same thing as you, but my kitchen needs replacing do an entire kitchen steam clean wouldn't be a major issue!

In our old house something similar happened to the cupboard next to our oven. I peeled the whole lot off and covered it with white sticky back plastic from B&Q and it looked fine. Not perfect if you looked closely but it didn’t stick out.

Wouldn't the excess charge be more than just buying a new door?

edwinbear · 21/08/2022 11:14

I’ve got a white gloss kitchen and have had to replace a couple of doors over the years. Most notably when DD drove her brand new hover board into one on Christmas Day. I order them easily from the company we bought the kitchen from, they were about £80 each.

BalloonSlayer · 21/08/2022 11:15

Just to say our old kettle used to sometimes pop its own lid open so it may not have been your fault.

I think it depends on your policy. We have accidental damage and have claimed for a few things and not had to pay any excess.

That sounds like a good policy; I'll have to try to find one like that and compare costs. Thank you.

YSH34 · 21/08/2022 11:26

Sorry to hijack the thread but I don't suppose the hair dryer trick would work on laminate flooring which has bubbled in the same way?

custardbear · 21/08/2022 11:40

Hi back to the shop you bought it from, that's crappy if it's ruined so easily! You'll be getting steamy kitchens from time to time and it shouldn't do that
