How do you order a coffee?

I just went to a coffee shop with a friend. You order at the counter. I said “Hi, please may I have a latte. Thanks”.

She says that all that is a waste a of time, and that when the staff member asks what you want, it’s fine to just say “a latte”. It holds up the queue for other people, apparently. I think that’s really rude, and that all orders should include the words please and thank you.

Who is right?

You are 👍🏻

She's rude

TheFlis12345 · 19/08/2022 14:37

My 4 year old niece has better manners then your friend!

Cleothecat75 · 19/08/2022 14:38

It takes about an extra two seconds to say what you say and use your manners. It’s really not holding up the queue!

Elphame · 19/08/2022 14:39

She sounds rude.

I always say a plain black coffee please (and then inwardly sigh when they ask if I want milk which they nearly always do).

Then I say thank you.

Hoppinggreen · 19/08/2022 14:39

If my dc ordered like that (they wouldn’t) they would get a bollocking from me

Ihatethenewlook · 19/08/2022 14:40

You are right. You’re speaking to a server, not a servant

SheWoreYellow · 19/08/2022 14:40

“A latte please”, is the bare minimum, surely?

bloodywhitecat · 19/08/2022 14:40

Surely she can manage "A latte please"? She's rude.

Bigchezemakeme · 19/08/2022 14:41

Latte please is the normal response ‘please may I have’ makes you sound like an English textbook

BerthaBetty · 19/08/2022 14:41

This is a wind up?

MajorCarolDanvers · 19/08/2022 14:41

You added 2 seconds to the queuing time by saying please and thank you. And of course it was the right thing to do.

Your friend is both rude and bonkers.

Vampirethriller · 19/08/2022 14:41

Can I have (whatever) please? Thank you.

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 19/08/2022 14:42

She's extremely Rude and you're right. I probably would say please or thanks, but not necessarily both. I'd also say thanks once I got my drink.
The miniscule amount of time difference saying "latte" or "latte please" is really nothing.

badbaduncle · 19/08/2022 14:42

Is she American?
I've been told off for my time wasting politeness by Americans but in the uk it is rude not to say please and thank you

Wateringthegarden · 19/08/2022 14:43

Latte please.

Though in my case, it's a decaf flat white with skimmed milk please.

OiFrogg · 19/08/2022 14:43

It really doesn't, it's how loads of people talk.

AffIt · 19/08/2022 14:43

'Hello, may I please have...', in the same way I speak to anybody if I want something?

Your friend has shocking manners.

No, that is how normal people speak, I assure you.

PeekAtYou · 19/08/2022 14:46

My dd is a barista and she says that good customers will add please and thank you. If you want to be a perfect customer would have added size of drink and which milk.
When handed the drink, a perfect customer would also say "thank you" or "thanks" - many don't.

MissyCooperismyShero · 19/08/2022 14:59

Hello. Americano with milk please. ................. lovely, thanks

What?

I'm an American and wouldn't dream of not being polite.
Good luck not being polite in my coffee shops in Texas where southern hospitality is real.

Your American workmates are rude assholes and not true of us all!

girlmom21 · 19/08/2022 15:03

If they say "what can I get you?" you say "latte please"
If they just say hello you say "hi, could I get a latte please?"

To not say please is rude AF.

Fairygarden1992 · 19/08/2022 15:04

She's a nutter

Flatandhappy · 19/08/2022 15:10

You are right, she is rude.
