Greece for family holiday....where to go?

Basically, apart from backpacking in Corfu 25 years ago, I've never been. There are 4 of us, two children, 13 and 16 next summer.

We usually do Eurocamp as we like to be independent, and the relaxed campsite atmosphere.

I think we'd want self catering in Greece, an apartment? However we have no idea where to look, which islands...

We'd want somewhere reasonably peaceful, not super touristy, but with a town to walk to/in a small town, to get to shops and experience life there a bit. Beach obviously too!

Any islands you'd recommend? Any to avoid? Any self-catering companies which are trustworthy but not hugely expensive? Our budget isn't huge. Complete novices here. Any help gratefully received.

Quite a few years ago now, but we once had a very successful 2-family holiday in Skiathos* - 5 kids of those sort of ages.

*Sandy beach - if that’s important do check because quite a lot of Greek beaches are shingle.

Thanks, I'll have a look at Skianthos....

Sorry, I can’t. It wasn’t actually on the beach - just a short walk away, if that’s any help. Hotel, not self catering, probably a 3 star sort of place.

I love Rhodes.

Lots of history and great beaches. Plus, you can do day trips to Turkey.

Pefkos in Rhodes.
Lassi or Skala in Kefalonia (Lassi is walking distance into the capital Argostoli)
Alykanas/Alykes in Zante

They're our top three.
They have Facebook groups specific to those resorts too, that give you an excellent feel of what each island has to offer.
I just adore Greece!

Does anyone know if the beaches are shingle in kefalonia?
