Vacuum cleaner advice

I'm sure I've read threads with vacuum cleaner advice on MN before... but please indulge me in another one, cos my vacuum cleaner started generating smoke from the motor so its a gonner.

It was a big Medicare vac we inherited from a relative, so a canister on wheels with a hose, a dustbag inside.

I've used cordless stick vacuum cleaners before and found the frequent emptying of the chamber annoying. plus the charge not lasting well (I think it was a cheap brand)

We're not ready/ set up for a robot vac.

What's your recommendation? I wish you could test drive vacuum cleaners, it seems like taking a punt and hoping you buy one you like. I feel I like dustbags but they don't seem fashionable.

This thread is a bit old now, so if you have landed here looking for recommendations, we recently updated our best vacuum cleaner buyer's guide, featuring the best cordless, cylinder and upright vacuums, tried and tested by Mumsnet.

We hope you find this useful.
