Your hands at the dentist, what do you do with them?

Having spent a lot of time in the dentist chair the past month, it has got me wondering what others do with their hands whilst practically upside down, with someone else's hands in your mouth!

Do you clutch the arms for dear life?
Lay them limply by your side?
Or like me rested on my tummy, fingers interlocked. hanging on for dear life!

I'm just being nosy to be honest!

I put my hands on top of one another & rest them on my chest

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/08/2022 20:38

Clutch the arms

Had root canal treatment this morning. I had to hold the paper towel with my left hand as it was blowing with the air con. My right hand gripped the arm but was ready to be raised if I needed him to stop.

Clasp them with my nails dug into the palms. I am not a relaxed patient

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/08/2022 20:42

Same as you OP.

Findahouse21 · 16/08/2022 20:43

Hold the nurses hand when I really need 😳

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 16/08/2022 20:43

Sweat profusely and clutch the arm rests

Mustardbay · 16/08/2022 20:43

Most patients rest them on their stomachs or have them on the arm rest ime.

Yes, mine is a root canal that's going a bit wrong🙄apparently I have an awkward root split.

I thought I was quite relaxed, but from the state of my hands after I'm not sure I am!

Had a lot of dental trips in last 6 weeks for some treatment. I took a bottle of iced water to grip and occasionally place against my wrist as stress relief.

gamerchick · 16/08/2022 20:45

I grip the arms.

I detest being upside down. Much preferred back in the day. Although I appreciate dentists backs may not have enjoyed it much.

I do always seem to get an itchy nose when I am in the dentist chair though, and she has her fingers in my mouth!!!!!!!!! WTF is THAT about? Confused

Do you notice what people do with their hands a lot ?

It was something I was thinking about today, distraction probably, but I wasn't uncomfortable or in pain or overly nervous but from the way my hands were clenched together it probably didn't look like that to the dentist.

I hold my own hands tightly. Except for last time, the dentist asked the nurse to hold my hand so I didn’t try to bat the injection away from my face (instinct).

I’m back in the chair tomorrow 😭.

SouperNoodle · 16/08/2022 20:52

My DH is my dentist so when I get bored, I poke him in the stomach or something else mildly annoying 😂

Darkness22 · 16/08/2022 20:56

Pinch my arm

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 16/08/2022 21:07

I haven't been to a dentist for 4 years but I'm pretty sure hang onto the arm rests. Not because I'm nervous or anything but more because I always feel like I'm going to slide off the chair backwards

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 16/08/2022 21:11

Rest one hand on the other across my tummy. Ankles crossed!
