How do I send paint?!

I have a tin of paint I'm happy to sell because I didn't love the colour in the end. It has been opened but just a dash used.

Have looked into couriers for prices etc. and have noticed that paint is listed under prohibited items, I assume due to risk of spillage. I've tried all reputable couriers I can think of! Evri, DHL, DPD, Yodel etc.

How do I go about shipping it? How do the original companies ship it to us with no issues? Is it because it's new and sealed? Will I just have to offer local collection only?

Thanks!

Sorry, forgot to mention it's just standard Matt wall paint!

It's considered hazardous. Your can't post it!!

Collect only

Bergamotte · 16/08/2022 16:51

Yes, you can't send it through the post. Buyer would have to collect.

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/08/2022 16:52

Usually that just means it needs to be labelled properly when sending with the contents and volume declared.

Eg: at the post office and sent by royal mail you tell them exactly what it is, what it contains and the volume and they will print a label for the parcel that goes on the front and send it as usual but couriers will have their own rules.

Almondsandraisins · 16/08/2022 16:53

Its not because of spillage its because solvent based paints are flammable so they can't just be shoved in the back of a van with other deliveries, there are rules around shipping flammable materials. To save people sending solvent based paint and calling it water based most places just dont ship paint

Sounds like more hassle than it's worth tbh.

When new the lid will have been put on by a machine so a lot less likely to spill in transit.

Plus I'm not sure you'll get much for it. You could try FB marketplace but otherwise there's charities that take paint for good causes. They have their own sites or collection points at the tip.

Why would someone buy paint by post, it would probably be cheaper to just buy some in b&q once you factor in postage. Just put it on a local Facebook group or Freecycle for local collection.

DownNative · 16/08/2022 18:44

Local collection only.

If disposing at the dump, fill with sharp sand to solidify it days beforehand.

TwigTheWonderKid · 16/08/2022 19:24

Coat paints deliver via DPD so they definitely accept paint. But agree unless it's some kind of super rare expensive paint it's probably not worth posting it.

turquoise1988 · 16/08/2022 21:05

@CakeCrumbs44 Is it that strange?

I live quite rurally and local stores like B & Q don't often stock brands that I prefer, like Little Greene, Lick or Coat. I always order testers and then order the paint from there, which comes to me by courier.

I assume they have some sort of arrangement with the courier companies to ship the paint out to customers.

Thanks for all of the responses.

I can see why some PPs are saying it's not worth the bother. The only reason I was bothering really is because it's by Lick (about £45 a tin I think) and in quite a popular/trendy colour so it seemed a shame to just throw it away if someone else could make use of it.

Royal Mail will send it, but it will cost more than it’s worth so I don’t see anyone buying it really.
Shipping paint that’s been closed by a machine is wildly different to you popping the lid back on, which is why dpd and the likes will not ship your used paint!

Sapphirensteel · 16/08/2022 21:19

I had paint delivered a few weeks ago. 3 x 5 l cans each in it’s own box. I think it was delivered by DPD.
I can see there’s a difference between new can seal and home revealing a can. I’d try advertising it collection only.
