Stinky Converse- Help!!

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 16/08/2022 12:09

DS's converse are simply gross after wearing them all day everyday with no fucking socks.

I've tried the bicarb thing, even after 2 days with it in, it hasn't gone.

Borrowed cat litter from neighbour, left for 2 days, still as disgusting as a dead rat in a sewer.

I'm worried about sticking them in the washing machine as DS is autistic and if I ruin the only pair of shoes he will actually wear at the moment, he simply won't leave the house. (I can't afford to buy more, plus these are specific ones my mum bought him in Brighton)

Any other tips, or ideas that will mean they are definitely safe in the washing machine?

They're so bad you can smell them from upstairs when they are in the hallway!

Is there a way of steaming them to kill bacteria? If you have a tumble dryer you could try a carrier bag with a flannel or something soaked in zoflora or detol? It might be less damaging than the washing machine.

Boot Bananas Eco Travel Deodorisers - you can get them on Amazon. I haven't used them myself but I rock climb 🧗‍♀️ which involves wearing very tight shoes, no socks and very sweaty feet. I always see people using these shoe bananas at the rock, you just leave them in the shoe when not wearing, they last up to a year, good luck!

You just have to wash them OP. Put them in a pillow case and throw them in the wash, cold cycle, the shortest cycle your machine has. Spray some vinegar in them before putting them in. I've been washing DS trainers that way and never had a problem with damage.

I agree with as above as well, I'd say converse are quite a safe pair to wash seen as they don't actually have much structure to them x

I just put mine in the wash

I wash my converse in the machine, 30 degrees, in a pillow case, they come out fine. I put a little liquid detergent inside them.

Put them in the freezer. It kills the bacteria.
I have washed my daughters converse on a quick wash. I didn't bother with a pillow case and it didn't harm them.

The pillow case is just to muffle the sound of the soles clattering off the drum.

Converse wash fine, if they’re particularly bad you can put a dishwasher tablet in each shoe!

freezing doesn’t kill bacteria, it only puts them into hibernation. As soon as the shoes have warmed up again the smell will be back
