Books about Partition (India/Pakistan)

I knew a bit about Partition and have read a few relatively recently works of fiction such as A Fine Balance and A Suitable Boy (both of which I loved). Can anyone recommend any more fiction set in this period or maybe even some non-fiction? (I don't generally have the patience/determination for non-fiction but I'm in my 40s so maybe I need to get a grip 😁)

Agree about Midnight's Children, I learnt so much when reading it in the 1990s.

A few fiction works I’d recommend:

“Train to Pakistan” - Khushwant Singh
“Pinjar” - Amrita Pritam
“Midnight’s Children” - Salman Rushdie
“Ice Candy Man” - Bapsi Sidhwa
“Toba Tek Singh” - Saadat Hasan Manto (and his short story collection “Mottled Dawn”)
“The Broken Mirror” - Krishna Baldev Vaid
“Tamas” - Bhisham Sahni

BeautifulWar · 15/08/2022 23:31

Shalimar The Clown is another good Rushdie novel that focusses on Kashmir.

Stillfunny · 15/08/2022 23:34

The Viceroys House on Netflix is a dramatision of British withdrawal from India and the resulting Partition .
