Has anyone else had an Amazon email telling them their kindle is out of date?

Are you getting a new one?

Also to confirm, you can read the material you already have on your kindle but you can’t download anything new from September. Is that right?

I haven't and I have one of the original kindles.

I had a couple. Can’t buy from my original kindle but I never did anyway so I wasn’t really bothered but then I got another email offering 30% of the price of a new kindle plus £25 kindle credit so I upgraded. We were going away on holiday and I was a bit worried my old kindle would give up on me when I was away.

Er no, but I got my second hand so maybe they don't need to email me. When will it stop working?

No, and my kindle is so old it has a keyboard! Mine is 2010. However just googled it and found this:

www.news18.com/news/tech/soon-older-amazon-kindles-will-stop-supporting-e-book-store-but-theres-a-workaround-5242495.html

So as this is always how I buy mine I won't notice any difference.

Thanks for that link. So you can get books on the Amazon website and send them to your kindle but not directly from the store using your kindle. I was thinking of getting a new one but I might not bother if I can still access books.

I think it’s from August 17th not September.

Yes, I still have the original Kindle. I won’t be changing it, you can still buy books for it, just not via the Kindle itself. My husband updated his to the new Kindle Oasis and found it very annoying that the collections he’d filed his books into didn’t import over and he then had to spend ages reorganising all hundreds of books into collections again.

Ratbagcatbag · 14/08/2022 15:28

@overitall1 I thought I was the only person to still have the original kindle with keyboard. I have the leather case with the light in the corner too.

Anyway, relieved to see I can still get books for it. :) phew

1idea · 14/08/2022 15:32

I have found my people! I also have the keyboard kindle and original cover with light in the corner. I still love it as much as when I bought it in 2010/11.

Chakraleaf · 14/08/2022 15:34

I use mome like this anyway

sheepandcaravan · 14/08/2022 15:35

Hhmmm

I have this one with keyboard and light.

I haven't been able to buy books on it or on the app for ages, I have to log in on a browser. Buy them, then ask for them to be Delivered.

It's a bit of a faff, but I haven't had an email with an offer! I don't think.

Kerrrmieee · 14/08/2022 15:37

I think it must just be the app because I have the same and it's in my phone. I can download from Amazon website though.

larkstar · 14/08/2022 15:58

As I understand it Amazon have removed the ability or facility in the suggested that runs in the Kindle that previously asked you to buy a book directly from your Kindle: you can't do that any more. You also can't buy Kindle eBooks via the Amazon app either. You can continue to buy Kindle books from the Amazon website (e.g. using a browser on a Windows laptop for instance) and they are still downloaded to your Kindle when you want to read them. I'm not sure about any particular issue with older Kindle hardware. Mine is a Paperwhite 2 bought in 2013.
