I failed an assignment 😞

Postgraduate healthcare student in my first year, with two young children, a disability, a carer role and not in great health myself...

Found out yesterday I had failed a written assignment by 6 marks. Absolutely gutted and too embarrassed to tell anyone except my husband. Feel like a massive failure and if I fail again, I will get kicked off the course. Awaiting confirmation I just have to amend the original submission and not write a whole new one from scratch (critical review of a research paper). I should hear on Monday... Handhold please!!

Perhaps writing in grammatical English might be a good start.

Take full advantage of any tutor help, and the university librarians. They get paid to help you, they’re not doing it as a favour, it’s literally their job. Are there any boards here you could ask for help on eg the health board might have nurses/physios/whatever who know of useful books.

Everyone fails essays and exams, they just keep it quiet so you don’t hear about it, that’s all.

I second this. I work in the academic skills team in a uni library. If you have similar at your institution please get in touch. I promise they won't judge you or tell you off.

Very well done op!! I was in exactly the same position as you 18 months ago and honestly felt devastated, particularly as my tutor was not in the least bit supportive or helpful.
I reached out to a colleague who was not only a real expert on the course I was studying, but also very academic. I paid him (much less than a private tutor) and he proof read all my essays from then on, giving me advice on where I may need to expand, use other research, etc, but never writing any essays for me. I just needed a bit of guidance and I quickly gained confidence in writing again. It was such a help and I passed with a distinction !!
