Meteors galore!

Just been out stargazing to see if we can see any of the meteors and there's so many! I have never seen one before, but in 40 minutes I've seen a dozen!

If you're up, too hot and fed up, get out and look up. Really puts a lot of stuff in perspective. Although, that might be the wine. Smile

They should be visible in any direction but if the moon is directly on your right at 3 o'clock. at present then east is at 12 o'clock and NE is around 10:30 o'clock. Roughly!

We just drove out to Holy Island but there's a thick sea fog 😢.

But saw the massive, beautiful sturgeon moon on the way back to Newcastle.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 13/08/2022 00:26

Saw an amazingly bright one just now-SW London 😀

Dotcheck · 13/08/2022 00:30

I saw three💫

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/08/2022 00:32

Thanks. We are in a rural area and have seen 6 or 7. One really good one.

This is so lovely. DH and I were out on our balcony drinking wine last night, not knowing anything about the Perseid Meteor Shower, and we noticed quite a few. It was lovely with the backdrop of the super moon.

The peak is now, apparently: Friday evening/Saturday morning, so I’m going to see if I can spot another before bed ☄️💫

JuneOsborne · 13/08/2022 00:54

Ah, that was amazing. Teen Ds joined me and we lightly snuggled while looking together and we both saw a proper shooting ball of fire type one and grabbed each other, oohing and aahing! Never seen anything like tonigh. Magical.

Combined with the moon, well, what a night.

Made me think of the book by Dava Sobel Galileo's Daughter fascinating read.

Four aeroplanes and a bastard hornet - the hornet was the decider re returning indoors! To then find a chunky mouse just sitting in the kitchen. He’s been dispatched outside and I’m going to bed grumpy at not having seen what I wanted to.

JuneOsborne · 13/08/2022 01:00

Oh dear @Furries, that's less than ideal.

The sky is clear here and I can see lots of stars but no meteors so far. I'm in West Yorkshire up by the moors.

I went to stay in Yorks a couple of years ago on this date to get a good look at them as there’s so much light pollution where I live. I looked for the biggest green space on the map and picked the moors! It was so gorgeous - had a reminder pop up on FB today. You’re so lucky to live there.

just been out in my garden and saw 3 in 20 mins - thanks for the reminder OP!

Oh no! I got freaked out by a couple of bats but at least I saw some meteors too (and made a wish!)

Definitely not ideal! But I’m not picking a fight with a hornet - they’ve been a bugger this year and I’m definitely not arguing with them.

The mouse - not so much of a problem. I’d have happily had a chat with him. But I think he was happier being escorted out before the cat woke up and found him.

Hope others get to see the show. I’ll look online tomorrow for photos to see what I missed out on.

As a positive, my front garden is bathed in moonlight, it looks magical. There is something other-worldly when your environment is lit by the moon.

Great that you got to see them - hope your wish comes true! Bats are amazing, love seeing them swooping over the garden.

Just caught sight of a slow one, and you could see the trail (better through binoculars as wasn't sure if it wasn't a plane). Absolutely incredible. Never seen one that hasn't been really fast.

JuneOsborne · 13/08/2022 01:37

I am in my mid 40s and have never managed to see anything like this! The trails are unreal, aren't they @Datgal?

Bump for the true night owls as I'm retiring for the night, as tempting as it is to stay for the next one!

In Skye and I’ve seen too many to count. Been bitten by the midges for the privilege but it’s been amazing.
