Why do employers take an age to make decisions

I'm waiting to hear back from a job interview over a week ago. Nothing, nada. I emailed internal recruitment person that I've been dealing with who told me that the CFO was on holiday but he would ping him an email and get an update. That was 3 days ago. Still nothing. I don't know wether to think that hearing nothing is better than hearing bad news but also can't help but wonder what's taking so long ! Any thoughts ? I'm a very impatient 'waiter' lol 😆

Contacting all the candidates, fitting in interviews around other work, possibly multiple job openings, waiting for someone else to decide etc etc

The poor bastard is on holiday and you want them to disturb him to get your answer?

I'm not sure I'd hire you.

I appreciate it's frustrating for you but a couple of weeks really isn't a long time.

So he has a week's worth of stuff to catch up on. I know that the hiring decision is very much at the top of your list but clearly not his.

isthistoonosy · 12/08/2022 18:03

It is frustrating but didn't it come up in the interview? I had one last week and was told it would be ateast a month untill I hear back. They have stuff going on, understandably.

tortoiseshellsub · 12/08/2022 18:05

I know I'm being ridiculous. I get that he's busy, I really do. I've been in this process since may so it's just taking so long. I just came on for a (lighthearted) rant. But I appreciate your replies

@isthistoonosy no, didn't come up. Global company with different time zones etc isn't helping along with staff holidays etc so it's just gonna be slow x

I'm also waiting, but Ive been offered a position. I just ask for an update every week or so. It's very frustrating because it seems like things only progress after I ask, probably lost amongst other tasks to do.

Some places take longer. I'd say just email for an update sometime next week, otherwise keep looking around, as much as that's not what you want to hear.

isthistoonosy · 12/08/2022 18:12

To be fair I asked as I have another interview in the pipeline (didn't mention that though).
Since May is a long time to be hanging around.
I'd leave it quite for a little for now and then send a more decisive - I need a time line - email to them.

Good luck!

tortoiseshellsub · 12/08/2022 18:18

@isthistoonosy think I'll wait until Wednesday. I hate chasing them as their obviously busy. I just don't know if it's perhaps bad news and they can't be arsed sending out the dreaded email to me. (You know how it is, you always think the worst)

In academia taking a month to hear back is pretty standard 😂

Discrimination1234 · 12/08/2022 18:30

In the government it can be six months and your start date might be a few months after that!
