This is shocking. He's had a fatwah hanging over his head for decades hasn't he?

There's pics showing blood spray on the wall that was behind him.

It looked as if pressure was being applied to his neck in the helicopted transfer film m

Could that be cast off? It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s arterial does it? Or does it?

Fizzgigg · 12/08/2022 17:09

Guardian now has live updates and yes confirming stabbing.

Surely there must be very tight (airport style?) security at any event he speaks at. Shocking that someone managed to get in with a knife.

Sadly no level of security is 100% safe.

Hope he's okay, it's a terrible thing to have happened

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 12/08/2022 17:13

It does make you wonder how much his personal security had been relaxed. I’m presuming he still has some level of protection, at least when making public appearances.

BoreOfWhabylon · 12/08/2022 17:21

Nobody has the right to not be offended. That right doesn't exist in any declaration I have ever read.

If you are offended it is your problem, & frankly lots of things offend lots of people.

Terrible. Hope he will be OK!

HellaFitzgerald · 12/08/2022 17:40

Awful. I must admit I only know him by name so apologies if this is an obvious question - but was this most likely religion related?

vinoandbrie · 12/08/2022 17:41

Yes, the assumption has to be that this is someone trying to carry out the fatwa.

Most likely. Several people have been killed or seriously injured as a result of the fatwa.

quirkychick · 12/08/2022 17:43

Omg, I hope he is OK. We saw him speak years ago, he was extremely charming and funny.

Theres still a huge bounty out on him.

BlueThursday · 12/08/2022 17:47

As much as I was fully aware of the threats I still gasped when the news popped up.

hoping for a speedy recovery

Not only religious fatwa, also a huge bounty.
I went once to his lecture, and he was such an intelligent and captivating speaker. A rare talent, and a very brave man to speak up too. I really hope he pulls through, but also saw those blood stains and it looks awful.

flusteredand · 12/08/2022 18:05

How terrible

Trivester · 12/08/2022 18:17

I remember the original reaction to The Satanic Verses and how barbaric it all seemed then.

The world is so much worse now and freedom of speech has been continually eroded, to the point where everyone in the public eye lives in fear of cancel culture.

He has stood firm for decades for the right to hold an opinion, at enormous personal cost.

Thank you Salman Rushdie.

NotTerfNorCis · 12/08/2022 18:22

Apparently the event he was speaking at was about free speech and America being a safe haven for persecuted writers?

LondonWolf · 12/08/2022 18:32

He was stabbed multiple times apparently. Really have had it with people both threatening and using violence to force their own ideologies.

EsmaCannonball · 12/08/2022 18:40

Just a few weeks after someone tried to stab Dave Chappelle on stage. It feels like we're living through very challenging times for the principle of freedom of expression, particularly as it seems to be younger people who are most set against it.

I remember going into Dillons (what is now Waterstones) when I was younger and there was a huge Muslim man blocking people from accessing The Satanic Verses. It seemed so wrong that someone in another country could order the death of someone in the UK, purely for writing a book; like something from the times of the Inquisition or witch-hunts. However, there did seem to be a lot less mealy-mouthed relativism about the situation around then. Nowadays the media would be able to dig up several cultural commentators to say, 'Well, maybe Iran's gone a bit too far, but .....'

calmlakes · 12/08/2022 18:41

I really hope he is ok.
Midnights Children is an amazing book.
And no one should be killed for their beliefs or written books.

Florenz · 12/08/2022 18:48

There are some evil, evil people in this world. And it only seems to be getting worse.

quirkychick · 12/08/2022 18:50

I agree, Midnight's Children is an amazing book. Also, that no one should be threatened or killed for their beliefs or writings.

Quite right. Increasingly we're in a society where these rights are being eroded.

Indeed
I still remember the fatwa from when I was a child
the horror of such an attack on free speech

we feared for his life then...much respect.

I haven't tried Midnight's Children, I found Fury a struggle so haven't read any more. So much respect for him on so many levels. His advertising lines are still gems, bless him.

CutesyUserName · 12/08/2022 19:15

He is in surgery, according to the BBC. I sincerely hope all goes well for him.

"Salman Rushdie is in surgery, Reuters news agency quotes his agent as saying."
