Hosepipe fines

Who issues these? Is it the police or the water company?
Surely you'd need proof that you've used it on that day?

It's the water company. They rely on people to report neighbours if they see them using a hosepipe, but to be honest the majority of people do respect the ban.

We all need to use less water when there's a drought. Nobody wants to have to use stand pipes.

purpleme12 · 12/08/2022 17:02

But they would need proof?

Why are you asking if they need proof?

It's in everyone's best interests to conserve water when there is a shortage.

Whiskers4 · 12/08/2022 17:09

Proof is easy these days. Just get out your mobile phone and send email with photographic evidence

purpleme12 · 12/08/2022 17:11

It's not like you think above

I fully would not put it past my neighbour to lie about me and report me and say I had used it.
I am thinking of how fast they act on this and if they ask for proof (I have CCTV but I need to know in time so it's not wiped off).

Wouldn't they be able to check your water use on the meter? So if your neighbour said you'd been using a hosepipe on X day, it would show whether your use was higher than usual

Mamamia7962 · 12/08/2022 18:14

OP - They wouldn't come out and investigate after just one phone call, they would need more than that. As a pp said a neighbour using a hose pipe could be recorded on a mobile. That's the evidence they would need, and they only prosecute as a last resort, so it would only be if someone continually ignored the ban.

I don't know would it?
I'm not sure our water use is steady ie the same amount each day. We do like baths

Ok.

I just want to be able to prove myself and don't know how it all works

We're not in a pipe ban area but I wish we were. I have a photo of my next door's garden's lush green grass next to our burn out one. I'm fuming over it every day.

purpleme12 · 12/08/2022 18:44

@Mamamia7962 they are not strangers to videoing us so I hope they don't take a photo of the hosepipe being used before the ban and pass it off a happening when the ban is in place

If they get calls, they - the water company - will need proof you were, rather than you having to prove you weren't. I suspect there will be some use of drones where a warning doesn't suffice in stopping it.

Oh, and my lawn looks totally lush in comparison with my neighbours. I haven't watered it all (I only water veg and newly planted stuff and do that with a watering can).

The only reason I can think is that my lawn is full of weeds, yellow, trefoil stuff that creeps along the ground and spreads all over. Looks fine on the surface when not in flower (i.e. so long as I keep it cut). I came back from holiday and my 'lawn' was totally yellow.

purpleme12 · 12/08/2022 23:24

Aye that's fine it's just that they could take a photo from before the ban and then send it when the ban is on.
Believe you me these people are disgusting

One of my fb friends has just had a fine. A drone captured them. £50 fine

Chocolatiestchocolate · 12/08/2022 23:29

My lawn is green too with just a few dry patches ive not watered it. Maybe some pool water has? But the water has been in my pool all year ( fully treated filtered etc)
