If I loved my old nespresso machine, what should I replace it with?

My old nespresso machine died after a long and happy life and the newer machine is a huge disappointment. But my sister has used it in my house and says she would love it so I’m going to look for something else.

If you love your coffee machine, could you tell me what features you love particularly?

My son has a Sage coffee machine with a grinder so he can do his own beans - he says the coffee is much superior to my nescafe Vertuo machine. Extensive research has shown him the exact number of beans to grind for a strong and less strong cup. There was some connection to Beethoven too but I can't remember what it was Grin

A new Nespresso!
I have my DS's cast off one which is now 12 years old
I like the new(ish) citi design but happy to use mine until it dies

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/08/2022 14:43

Ah sorry misread
Hope you find another to match old one in durability

Trivester · 12/08/2022 15:36

@blobby10 I think grinding is definitely superior in taste.
I’m not sure if I want to take the plunge because I liked the convenience and lack of mess.
But it’s there in the back of my mind as an option.

@uncomfortablydumb53 maybe I could find an old model on eBay. The new one I have is annoying me in every way.

Sage barista. It’s my best friend in the world.

DontKeepTheFaith · 12/08/2022 15:40

We just bought the same model nespresso.

We did venture into vertuoso or whatever they call it but it was shit, lukewarm coffee at best!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/08/2022 15:42

@Trivester
That's exactly what I would do!
The saying.." Things aren't made like they used to be" is so true!
At the time my DS Nespresso cost me £140( present) which was a huge amount for me... but it's paid dividends

Whatsmynameagainplease · 12/08/2022 15:42

Just get some instant coffee and help save the planet by not using 100s of small capsules

Trivester · 12/08/2022 15:42

They told me they don’t sell them anymore. Maybe he just saw me coming

I’ve just looked online and they do still sell them 🤬

Just found mine on eBay starting at 99p!

redtulip12 · 12/08/2022 15:45

Our first nespresso died and we replaced it but like you the newer one wasn't as good so we decided to see how we felt using ground coffee. Bought a Beko coffee machine as it was good value so wouldn't be too much of an expensive mistake if we didn't get on with it. It is brilliant, yes a bit more work than pods but wouldn't go back to them now

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/08/2022 16:13

@Whatsmynameagainplease
I have a reusable stainless steel pod which I use with my own Colombian ground coffee

LondonKitKat · 12/08/2022 16:14

Or try compostable pods. We get ours from Roar Gill roargill.com

Trivester · 12/08/2022 21:22

@LondonKitKat thanks

Have you tried V60 filter coffee? We've had a Nespresso machine for yonks (touch wood it now doesn't break now!) but My DH also frequently makes filter coffee. I'm very lazy as when it comes to making coffee, but have recently got into making coffee this way. It's easy to do and works out a lot cheaper per coffee and more environmentally friendly.

Coffee Dripper

Paper Filters

Small outlay of a size 01 dripper and paper filters. I buy Lavazza ground coffee - both the red 5/10 strength and decay 3/10 strength.

yoshiblue · 12/08/2022 22:19

BTW, the filters are 100% compostable so can go straight into the food bin afterwards.

SucculentLeopard · 12/08/2022 22:22

Aeropress for me. The travel one is better than the original
