UC 5/6 weeks delay for money - what do people do?

I want to start this by saying I know I'm very fortunate to have never had to navigate the benefits system - nor have any close friends or family.

Until now, when one has lost his job due to a restructure and not received a redundancy payment due to short tenure. He had finally gotten himself on his feet after years of bad MH. He had a good job, a nice flat share (London), he was doing so well.

He's applied for UC while he searches for another job, but it takes 5-6 weeks for money to arrive. As a single adult, the amount he will get barely covers his rent - in total it equals his actual rent and then about £70 pcm to live off.

Because he was late with his rent (no savings), he's been given one month's notice by his landlord. Turns out he's on a lodger contract because landlord/flat mate is live in.

So now he's unemployed, soon to be homeless, his parents can't help with money, I can't this time because have a baby on the way and have to save for mat leave (I have in the past).

What is he supposed to do? What do people do in this situation?
