Will it be ok? Mozzarella and tomato tart with puff pastry. I have emetophobia so pls be gentle! What is there to go off? Less than 24 hours after use by - should it be ok?

It will be perfectly fine

donkhonk · 11/08/2022 12:39

You'll be absolutely fine. My house regularly eat food past it's sell by date. As long as it smells & tastes ok, you'll be grand 👍

Vampirethriller · 11/08/2022 12:39

It'll be fine! If it's any comfort I've got food hygiene certificates.

FetchezLaVache · 11/08/2022 12:42

Waitrose, interestingly, are getting rid of best-before dates to encourage people to use their senses (including the common variety) to judge for themselves whether food looks, smells and tastes OK. They reckon it will save many, many tonnes of food from being thrown away needlessly.

I only hope the other supermarkets will all follow suit.

You wouldn't eat the tart if it was clearly mouldy but still in date, would you?

Hollyhead · 11/08/2022 12:44

I would happily eat something like that (and have done) at least 3 days if not 4-5 days over.

Snowraingain · 11/08/2022 12:46

100% yes it’s fine.

bloodyunicorns · 11/08/2022 12:46

Thank you! I knew I was being stupid/worrying unnecessarily. Fingers crossed then.

So do they build in extra space round use by dates?

I am not emetophobic, but I would eat that without a second's thought.

Yes they do!

NiqueNique · 11/08/2022 12:52

It will be absolutely fine. I would have eaten that up to 3-4 days over without even thinking, and after that I would quite happily have used my eyes/sense of smell to determine whether it was still fine to eat.

A relatively short time ago there was no such thing as use by dates and people (myself included and I’m only in my mid-forties) got on perfectly fine just using their common sense.
