Has died at 88, feel emotional about this as adored Father Christmas, The Snowman etc.

I will always remember his illustration of the nursery rhyme that ends with the milkmaid saying ‘“‘nobody asked you sir’ she said” and in his version waving two fingers at the stupid man.

Oh that's sad. I hope they repeat the wonderful documentary about him, and Ethel and Ernest. RIP Sad

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/08/2022 09:13

A good age. Loved reading his books to my two when they were little. RIP.

DuranDance · 10/08/2022 09:19

It is sad but he did have good innings and lived a good life, he will live on as well through his work and in all of us especially at christmas, the old curmudgeon!

Georgeskitchen · 10/08/2022 09:29

Rest in peace xxx
I love The Snowman ⛄

StopGo · 10/08/2022 09:44

There was a lot more to Raymond Briggs than The Snowman

Still traumatised by When the Wind Blows which I saw as a play when I was a student many years ago!

Moomoo2o22 · 10/08/2022 09:56

That's a shame, I loved Ethel and Ernest and Christmas isn't Christmas without the snowman!! But 88 isn't to bad an age.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 10/08/2022 09:58

The Snowman will live on for many a Christmas..

MyOtherProfile · 10/08/2022 09:59

Oh he was wonderful. Let's hope for lots of RB stuff on TV in tribute now.

CrapBag39 · 10/08/2022 10:00

Loved his books. When the wind blows scarred me for life! RIP.

rightonthyme · 10/08/2022 10:22

I would rewatch When The Wind Blows in tribute, but it gives me the collywobbles. RIP to a gifted, lovely man.

lollipoprainbow · 10/08/2022 11:00

Huge part of my childhood Christmases as a family we watched it every year and loved when the snowman flew over Brighton as that was our home.

Worse for me. I saw it in the cinema as a child with a friend. Mum saw it was animated and suitable rating and sent us off!!

PriamFarrl · 10/08/2022 11:04

I loved Fungus the Bogeyman.
Can I also recommend The Elephant and the Bad Baby? He didn’t write it but he did illustrate it. It’s a lovely bedtime book.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/08/2022 11:23

RIP Raymond. Hugely talented man.
I particularly loved his book Ethel and Ernest, about his parents' courtship and lives.
It was made into an animated feature

I sobbed all the way through
Saucery · 10/08/2022 11:27

Ahh, sad. He was a wonderful writer and illustrator.

@PriamFarrl one of my favourite books! Rumpeta- rumpeta-rumpeta

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/08/2022 19:05

BBC2 is showing Ethel and Ernest tonight at 7.30 pm. I'll be recording it.
If you haven't seen it, it really is well worth it. Real social history, beautifully observed and so moving.
