Has anyone had to request 'Letters of Administration' recently?

A close relative passed away last year and we have had to manage their estate. We wanted to try and do it without having to consult a solicitor which we have done thus far - but what a confusing minefield if you have never had to do it before! I'm not sure that it has saved us any time but it has saved us money (which was the driver behind doing it all ourselves).

I eventually worked out what I had to do with everything and today I requested the 'Letters of Administation' online (as there was no will). I was just wondering if anyone has had to do this recently and how long it took to receive them? The Probate Registry do state that the process could take up to eight weeks but I was wondering how realistic this is and if anyone has received them sooner?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Have you filled the relevant forms a PA1? Once you filled in that and sent the death certificate , and a cheque must include enough for duplicate death certificates , as banks and others like to have a certificate to release funds .

Also probate is taking at least 6 months at the minute . They have a such a backlog that I wouldn't rely on 8 weeks . Getting to speak to someone on the phone is a nightmare and can take an hour to get through.

I deal with probate cases on a daily basis .

Thanks no much for replying, yes, I have done everything in your first paragraph. I'm just waiting to receive the letters of administration now.

That's so depressing that it's a six month backlog 😩 It feels like we're never going to be free of all of this. It definitely is the gift that keeps on giving, isn't it!

Thank you.

It's literally a lottery , some cases come through quicker than others . If there's a problem with the forms or they have a query it sets it back .

It's very frustrating , we have multiple cases that we are waiting to receive probate for . I think it's hard for the family of the deceased as they want closure . Fingers crossed it comes through quickly .

Thank you. You're right, I'm so done with it all, I just want it all over and done with now. Thanks again.
