We live in Hampshire and are under a hosepipe ban. I grow a lot of veg during the summer, plants that need water which I usually get from four water butts. They ran dry last week, so I ordered a 10m length of narrow plastic pipe, saved our shower water and set up a syphon to move the water from the bath to a water butt.

DS, never having seen a syphon before, now thinks I am a scientific genius. It won't last long but I shall enjoy it while it does. 😊😎

DD told me I was a genius this morning for making the yogurt and blackberry lollies she’s been eating for weeks. Was nice to hear anyway 😂

Leafy3 · 09/08/2022 13:22

Excellent, where did you get the syphon?

They sound lovely, are they just yogurt & pureed blackberries? Anything else? I'll give them a try.

With the syphon, I lodged one end of the pipe in the water, ran the rest of it out of the window, down to the water butt and then sucked hard on the free end for 10 seconds. DS thinks it's magic.

Berries in a pan, heat and smoosh with a spatula or potato masher, add honey, amount dependent on now sweet they are, cool, mix with Greek or plain yogurt and whack in a lolly mould. They’re healthy enough for breakfast!

I’m very impressed by your watering system and it is nice to know they appreciate us sometimes isn’t it 😊

I remember my dad doing that with a siphon and the bath water when I was a kid and there was a drought in the spin the south east.

we had amazing runner beans that year ..

In the spin? Bloody phone

How does this work though? Wouldn't it be soapy water? We are about to be out under hosepipe ban and I font want my plants to die

MintJulia · 09/08/2022 22:52

The water will contain a tiny bit of organic soap, and about a teaspoon of shampoo. The plants seem not to mind. 😊
