last minute invitation
not sure if we can afford the pub meal

it is family seen only occasionally however
bit of a clanger
what would you do? or say?

Just be honest about the money being an issue but maybe offer to meet them after the meal for a drink (budget permitting).

Never be afraid to be honest if you can't afford something.

I would just be honest, maybe suggest meeting them in the park Or at home after for a catch up instead

But what if they then say “we will do it next week instead” or if means you can’t meet with them at all if they are only there for a short time

They might want to pay because they want to see you

They won't feel "obliged" to pay.
They will either offer because they want to treat you, or they won't.

Lots of people struggling financially at the moment. Be honest and suggest either a drink or cheaper option somewhere due to lack of funds. If they offer to pay then let them do so.

So, and this is going to sound blunt but I do feel for the position you are in, you have to decide which is most important your pride or seeing your family.

You need to tell them. Don't lie.

"We would love to see you. That's my weekly fasting day though so we'll come a bit later and have a drink."

We'd love to see you but that's little jonnies football night so you enjoy your meal and we'll be along later for a drink .

Fish & Chips will probably cost more than a pub meal
