Just be honest about the money being an issue but maybe offer to meet them after the meal for a drink (budget permitting).

Never be afraid to be honest if you can't afford something.

Sirzy · 08/08/2022 18:17

I would just be honest, maybe suggest meeting them in the park Or at home after for a catch up instead

godmum56 · 08/08/2022 18:18

yup, just tell them

Holly60 · 08/08/2022 18:19

Definitely tell them. Meet them after for a drink?

Suggest fish and chips at yours instead or come over for a cuppa the next day?

Mellowyell292 · 08/08/2022 18:23

If you don't want to discuss finances id go with good old D&V or covid symptoms.

TeapotTitties · 08/08/2022 18:25

I'd be honest, why not?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/08/2022 18:25

covid! of course
ideak excuse

But what if they then say “we will do it next week instead” or if means you can’t meet with them at all if they are only there for a short time

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/08/2022 18:27

They might want to pay because they want to see you

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/08/2022 18:31

only around for a few days
difficult

OP posts:
Parpophone · 08/08/2022 18:37

It isn't difficult.
Don't make up lies.
"That's really kind of you, but we can't stretch to eating out at the moment"

They won't feel "obliged" to pay.
They will either offer because they want to treat you, or they won't.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/08/2022 18:39

thank you @Parpophone
good wording

Cornishclio · 08/08/2022 18:40

Lots of people struggling financially at the moment. Be honest and suggest either a drink or cheaper option somewhere due to lack of funds. If they offer to pay then let them do so.

So, and this is going to sound blunt but I do feel for the position you are in, you have to decide which is most important your pride or seeing your family.

girlmom21 · 08/08/2022 18:55

You need to tell them. Don't lie.

FourChimneys · 08/08/2022 19:18

"We would love to see you. That's my weekly fasting day though so we'll come a bit later and have a drink."

hattie43 · 08/08/2022 19:25

We'd love to see you but that's little jonnies football night so you enjoy your meal and we'll be along later for a drink .

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 08/08/2022 19:30

Fish & Chips will probably cost more than a pub meal

gogohmm · 08/08/2022 19:55

Eat first at home and meet for a drink/dessert
