Mid-cycle bleeding

Hello all, I am wondering if you can help or offer some advice or reassurance by sharing your own stories? I am 34 years old, not on any hormonal birth control, and have always had very regular periods. However, for two months now I have been experiencing mid-cycle bleeding. The blood (so far, at least) is not fresh (i.e. bright red) blood, but brown/dark brown, indicating old blood. The first month was quite light, more like brown-tinged ovulation mucus, but it was the first time I'd seen anything like that on my panty liner. Following that, my period was 10 days late (definitely wasn't pregnant, and confirmed with two home tests). I am currently mid-cycle again and this time am losing significantly more old blood - enough to need to wear a sanitary towel. Again, it is dark brown, but there are clots - it is definitely more like period blood, just not bright red. I am also cramping in my lower back as I would do on my time of the month.

I don't know if this is at all relevant, but I have recently been to the doctors and just this week have been diagnosed with iron-deficiency anaemia; I am due to pick up my prescription for iron tabs today. My periods are normally very heavy, so the doctor has attributed that as the cause and is not worried. I did mention to my doctor the bloody ovulation mucus (at that point I had only experienced it the once), and she didn't seem concerned. But this time the blood is heavier, so I am worried and have booked another consultation with her on the 22nd. (My surgery is so busy that it's really hard to get an appointment, and at this point, the 22nd seems so far away...)

I know that this may be normal for some, but it's never been normal for me, and I'm so confused about what's going on with my body. Could the anaemia be wreaking havoc? Maybe I haven't been expelling as much as I should have on my period, and now my body is clearing out what's leftover?

Thanks so much for taking the time to read, it's so much appreciated.

Hello, did anything come of this? I am currently experiencing the same x

I’m not the OP but had a similar issue, mid-cycle bleeding for quite a prolonged period with all smear tests coming back clear and nothing visible on a scan. Eventually I found out that I had several polyps in my uterus, close to my cervix. Had those removed under GA last year and haven’t had any mid-cycle bleeding since. My periods have been less painful and not quite as heavy since then too.

@BlueHeat how did they find the polyps? I have had an ultrasound but nothing visible on that x

@Anne8888 I’d had several transvaginal ultrasounds at the gynaecologist but it wasn’t until I ended up in A&E that they were discovered. They had blocked - or had caused inflammation that blocked - my cervix which meant my period blood couldn’t flow out freely. I had several months where I had days of pain before bleeding - I wondered whether it was endo - and then one month it got so bad I ended up having to go to hospital. I think either they had better equipment there or a polyp had grown big enough to be seen on the transvaginal scan. I really hope you’re able to get some answers and treatment

did you find the outcome ? Currently going through this

Anne8888 · 07/05/2024 23:52

@S22 I had an examination and the nurse said that I had a cervical ectropion which is really common xx

rainbowbee · 08/05/2024 00:52

I (40) have that very occasionally, maybe once every two-three years since my early twenties. Possible ovulation bleed and I have a retroverted uterus but an ultrasound years ago ruled out anything sinister.

S22 · 08/05/2024 07:34

I have retriverted uterus too does that have significance?

S22 · 08/05/2024 07:35

@Anne8888 did u get spotting just the once ? Did it eventually stop ?

Lucylu1984 · 12/01/2025 19:49

I'm getting brown spotting during ovulation, nearing 41. Wondering whether to ask for birth control pills, has anyone else done that? X
