Using a local SIM card in the EU for data - any advice / experience

We have a mi-fi unit. Basically you put a SIM card in there and it acts as portable wi-fi.

Hoping to use it in the EU - we can use public / campsite wi-fi but it would be great if we could use this and not use too much of our own mobile data.

Does anyone know any good PAYG sim cards you can just get over there with good data allowances - and can be used across the EU?

Google is helping of course but MN has a lot of experience as well
