Are first periods usually light?

DD is on holiday with her dad and SM and has just started her first period. Is it likely that it will be light and that she can swim without any protection? There’s almost nothing to do on the holiday apart from swimming.

My DD had barely anything for her first. I feel for your DD, though - hopefully her SM can offer support?

Mine was an absolute horror show, I remember being very angry at all the literature referring to “light spotting”. What was yours like? Surely that is your best indicator?

How practically minded is she? I used a tampon from my first period onwards because it was the only thing we had in the house and it was Christmas. It was fine, if she's fairly pragmatic I'd probably suggest that if it does get heavier.

If she wouldn't cope with that are they somewhere they could be Primed some period swimwear?

I have no recollection of what my first period was like. I feel so sorry for her. I really wanted her to be at home with me when she started. I know her SM will look after her but it’s not the same. I will suggest tampons but I don’t think she’ll want to use them.

Remember her perspective will be different to yours. Even if it looked light to you it is probably going to feel anything but to her.

My first period started the day of my swimming lesson. Nothing on earth would have made me go in that pool that day.

Just a reminder to be careful how much information you share about your own and your daughters' periods. Men with period fetishes are known to frequent threads like this.

My first period was so light I wasn’t even sure it was a period . The second time I got my period I was at a water park and went to the bathroom to see skid marks on my bathing suit . I thought I didn’t wipe properly except I hadn’t pooped so I was confused . I continued swimming for the day and the skid marks kept reappearing 😆 then I realised when I got home it was actually dark blood and I was on my period . That was on my 13th birthday . It wasn’t until my third period that it started to get a bit heavier.

Mine was very light, one dd the same, the other slightly more like a normal period but not heavy.
You can get period swimwear but on holiday that is tricky. Bikini bottoms under a little shorty suit ? Are they abroad or in the UK ?

Wouldloveanother · 07/08/2022 10:01

Mine was really really heavy, I had huge sanitary towels and had to change them at least every hour.

Poor girl, awful timing for a first period :( My daughter got her first, and second, periods while on holiday this summer, definitely not light enough for swimming.

If its possible for her to get period swimwear then that's a good option, but she might not feel comfortable swimming anyway as its all so new and probably upsetting.

Mine was a full on event; I soaked through my school trousers before I even knew it had started. My mum was the same.

Can she try small tampons? If she's comfortable with herself she can tuck the string up between her bum cheeks or forwards between her labia so no risk if it hanging out of her swim suit
