How to clean retainers?

CanIbeRio · 06/08/2022 16:27

DD had her braces removed last week and now has retainers.
Orthodontist said just warm water and a toothbrush to clean...but it's not proving very effective and the retainers have white residue building up.
I've Googled how to clean them and soaking in vinegar keeps coming up but I'm wondering if that may taint them and make them taste of vinegar? I've also seen cleaning solutions on Amazon but am wondering why they weren't suggested by dentist and it's putting me off trying one Has anyone used on of these solutions or even the vinegar?
Any recommendations greatly appreciated. Thanks

Plastic ones?

I put them in a cup of boiled, cooled water, add a good splash of white vinegar and a dollop of bicarb. I leave them for maybe 20 minutes at least but not longer than 90 - I worry that they’ll start to degrade if I do but that’s not based on fact!

You can buy tablets online. They are similar I suppose to ones for people with dentures.

Dd was told to use handwash and a soft brush. You can also use those retainer brite tablets you dissolve in water

Denture tablets occasionally. Washing up liquid and a toothbrush other times. That's what my dd was told. She's still doing that ten years later, but bought new ones about a year ago.

Those retainer tablets & the denture tablets never worked on my retainers..

Oh thanks so much all for your replies. Loads of advice....I might give the tabs off Amazon a go or denture tabs...im guessing like Sterident? Yes, they are the horrible plastic retainers. Getting used to them now, but my God, how uncomfortable she's found them 😕
