I'm going on holiday tomorrow, leaving DS1 to paint the bathroom

It's his fault it needs doing because of the mildew from his ridiculously long showers. The paint's also started to peel on the ceiling, so it needs sanding properly.

He's got all the equipment he needs and detailed instructions.

What will I come back to?

He's 20yo and between jobs. He has one lined up to start in a week. Would you pay him and if so, how much?

It's just the ceiling and door frame. Everything else is tiled.

I would pay him the equivalent of about £10 per hour. Ask him to note the time it takes and bear in mind he will be slower than a professional. Painting a ceiling and fiddly door frames is a tricky job so I would be generous if there are not too many paint splashes on floor and tiles, and if the door frame paint does not overlap onto tiles much.

Does he live there for free? Or does he pay rent? If he pays rent I'd pay him for the job, if he lives there for free I wouldn't.

I would definitely pay him. I'd go with a fixed price though. Decorators start at about £120 a day so I'd give him £50 a day. How many days do you think, assuming he is slow? Woodwork or just walls?

So he's living there?

No I wouldn't pay him

Yes he lives here. He pays £50pw keep, although I had agreed to waive that while he looked for work, but in the event he'll only be unemployed for 3days.
