Campervanning in France?

DH and I going to one Rugby World Cup match in Lille next year. Had planned to drive over the day before the match, and the day after do a bit of a tour of the WWII sites over a week as we are history buffs.

There are literally no hotels in Lille left for the match day and the day before, apart from ones that are merrily charging £400 a night. So we're thinking about hiring a small campervan from the UK and driving that over.

We've never stayed in one before - is this a good idea or have I gone mad?

Generically campervans are OK and France is generally pretty well set up to accommodate them, especially in the tourist/rural areas. You just ne to watch out for some local restrictions that some communes have on overnight parking.

As for the specifics of Lille and a World Cup match - don't know, but campers are popular over here, especially with many sports followers/sportsfans so I doubt you'd be alone.

There might be high demand for any local sites that exist so that might be worth researching and of course depending on where you end up parked you'll need a plan for getting from the camping car to/from the game...
