Ok perhaps more stupid me.

I have booked a holiday on the 08th September, sent application for a first passport off on the 18th July. I hoped to send it off sooner but son was in hospital. Anyway, I am now panicking. I called the passport advice line, apparently I can’t fast track passport or apply for premium online thing because I already have a passport application in progress. It’s at We’ve received your documents’ stage.

I absolutely know no one has a crystal ball and plenty will tell me it could take up to 10 weeks and I realise many have been waiting a lot longer.

What are people’s current experience of waiting for the first passport

does anyone have any useful suggestions?

or do I just loose money for the holiday ?

My dd’s first passport arrived today, they received the documents 7th July, approved the passport this Monday 1st August and then delivered today! So less than 4 weeks. So a fair chance yours will come before your holiday

Just over 4 weeks recently for child’s first passport

Our daughters took 5 weeks so you should be fine, we didn't book til we got it but you should be ok!

I'm waiting for a child's first passport for ds2 and a first adult passport for ds1 (although his counts as a renewal because he's had a child's passport previously). Also hoping they arrive in time for our holiday.

Does anyone know how long it's taking for things like birth certificates and old passports to be sent back? I'm hoping once they arrive, I'll know its being processed and will feel less panicky.

If you turn up at your passport office with proof that you're flying in 48 hours they are often suddenly able to help.

montimama · 09/08/2022 12:59

@EnglishRose1320 our birth certificate got returned 1 week AFTER the new passport had arrived. You can usually check progress of the application with the reference number they gave you, I also got text updates from them.

Our passports took 9 and 10 weeks respectively. The reality is no-one can tell you, some are coming back in a few weeks some are taking well in excess of 10 weeks.

EnglishRose1320 · 09/08/2022 13:49

@montimama , kinda pleased to hear its totally random, had heard of loads of people getting birth certificates back in a week or so, and worried the fact ours hadn't was a bad sign.

Becky6758 · 09/08/2022 13:55

I waited 2 weeks for a renewal earlier this year
