I wish these people would just never go on holiday!!

This is just a rant. I'm so sick of people!

I work in tourism (holiday rentals) and I'm sick of (unfortunately, mainly Brits) threatening legal action for absolutely EVERYTHING!

They book a property without aircon, it doesn't say anywhere on the listing that there's aircon nor have they mentioned any desire for aircon. They arrive, notice there's no air con and go fucking ape shit, threatening us in emails and text messages and phone calls, demanding all of their money back immediately or they're going to drag us through the courts. Same situation for anything else you can imagine - a washing machine breaks during their holiday (it happens, they don't break down on a schedule!), so they deem the property to be unfit for rental and not in line with the advertisement. We try and arrange for it to be fixed or for a new one to be fitted as soon as possible, but if we can't have it all done and dusted within half a day of their complaint, in come the threats and demands for full repayment.

I love my job, I love it so much, but fucking hell this type of shit gets to me.

Some people are just miserable I think. Why on earth would you be complaining about amenities that wasn't mentioned on the listing!! Personally when I go on holiday I let so much slide and just try to enjoy myself.

Agree, lots of people seem to have turned into miserable, critcal complainers.

I try to be positive around such people but fuck, it's hard, they drag you down with them.

OP, try to rise above it, easier said than done I know!

They’ve paid ££ and want full value for money……and all the extras thrown in for free!

I'm a very positive person and usually rise above it, but it's August now, I've had months of this and I'm just completely drained by it all. It's absolutely mad how angry some people get. I've said "go and have a glass of wine in the garden and call me back" far too many times this year already!

Yes! I read that one and the whole time was ticking off all of the bullshit I've had to deal with whilst other people on the thread didn't believe these things happened regularly. If only they knew 😂

Same, I've had plenty of "annoying" things happen to me whilst on holiday but understand that it's just part of life, people can't anticipate some things breaking.

It's just the mad complaining and rudeness that get to me. A small (very small, few inches long and 2 inches thick!) tree branch falls off a tree in the middle of the night because of high wind and the next day it's "our child could've died had they have been standing outside under the tree, unattended at 3 o'clock in the morning - we want all our money back plus compensation for the stress it's caused us!!!"

Some of these are just CFs who don’t understand how compensation works and think they can get money out of you if they complain. I can’t stand the holiday moaners, it must be very frustrating to have to deal with them in your job!

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2022 11:17

we are not holiday complainers.
i was a bit irked however to come away this week, open the door to the back garden and within seconds found ourselves the new owners of 2 cats! There is a supply of cat food here and a cat bowl 🫣
there were no mentions of cats in the listing 😂

A lot of them are bullies, it's taken me a long time to know how to deal with them so I mostly can now but it really ruins your day.

@TheChosenTwo I mean that I do get, if the previous owners are actually feeding them then it'd be nice to know that in advance hahah. However, you're only complaining correctly if you demand the full rental back, compensation for stress and the tears of the owner's firstborn. Anything less than that and the owners are really taking you for a mug, ya know.

I think there are people out there who will look for anything to complain about in hopes of getting some (or perhap even all) of their money back

They probably see it almost as an unoffical discount - like a spot the mistake competition!

I would think that a property in a hot country should have air-con as standard.

It would be like someone booking to stay in Scotland in winter and finding when they arrived that the property had no central heating. Not helpful if the travel agent says, “But you didn’t ask for central heating”.

FelicityFlops · 03/08/2022 11:23

Well I just do not understand why people go and stay in "just" another dwelling where they have to do everything they would at home, but in unfamiliar surroundings. It doesn't seem like much of a break to me.
It must very annoying to receive complaints about facilities that were not requested. I very much doubt that these people have air conditioning at their own houses and I am sure, if their washing machines broke down, it would take several days (at best) to have them repaired or replaced.

The 'customer comes first' has morphed into an unshakeable entitlement and nowhere has that been more so than in the UK. The last 25 years has been one big party for consumers, but those times are over.

The world is becoming polarised and the west just got smaller. Climate change will be the nail in the coffin where consumers will have to be satisfied with much less. There are going to be some very disappointed and disillusioned consumers over the next couple of generations. Those who have never had those choices have less to lose.

Thing is, it's just not realistic. I live in a hot country and aircon isn't everywhere in every single house, people are fine without because we have other practices to keep the heat out, but some tourists refuse to do those practices and then complain it's too hot. All info is given prior to booking, if you want a place with aircon then you request one and you get one, it's just insane to book one without and then complain there is none, certainly when it's in the first bloody line of the villa description 😂

Sadly, not at all! We've had "the water in the pool is way too cold, our child could get hyperthermia" (water is 26 degrees).
"There's a crack in a wine glass, I could've cut my entire lip off and ended up in hospital, I demand all my money back"
"I booked this property because I loved the wooden decking around the pool. But my kid ran around on the decking in bare feet for hours and eventually got a 1cm splinter, he is seriously injured and I've now had to take him to a doctor, this villa isn't fit for purpose and I'm reporting you"

So, so, so many more. 🙄

Sounds like they're all MNetters 😁

Have they told you to sort your finances out and asked who owns what before you LTB too?!

Seriously have my sympathy, I steer clear of general public at the best of times so I can't imagine having to deal with them on a daily basis.

You're right though, the atmosphere has definitely changed from pre-pandemic. Lunacy.

We haven’t complained at all about the cats! I’ve just shut all the bedroom doors and thankfully there are other doors downstairs to keep them off the soft furnishings etc, dh is allergic! They didn’t stay in overnight, we’ve seen them again this morning, came in and had a stroke from dd.

I always check that an apartment has air con abroad before booking and/or read reviews about it to check what issues people raise.
Having a usable pool is also important to us, so we try to pick places with pool heating.
Mind you I think we were justified in complaining in France when our pool turned green and was essentially unusable. I'm still annoyed at myself for paying some of the pre agreed heating costs.

TheChosenTwo You've actually just reminded me that when we first bought our house, there was a neighbours cat who essentially lived in the garden. No one ever fed him, he just liked being there and wasn't a bother. The first year we started renting the house in the summer I had to ask guests to ignore the cat in case they started feeding him, then he'd never leave! Thankfully he's found somewhere else to relax now!!

Rookiemere Fully agree. Last year I had a family stay in a villa and the pool turned green during their stay, however, they thought it was "normal" and didn't say anything, even when I texted them to see if everything was ok! By changeover day it looked like a pond and it was absolute murder to get ready for the next people as it takes quite some time, thankfully the next people understood. I just couldn't believe these guests had been swimming in a green pool all week and didn't think to mention it hahaha!

@Brightlightmoon they tried to claim the green pool was our own fault for getting it heated ( which they were happy to do and charge for) then they claimed it was down to a windy storm.

The DCs continued to use it but not the adults and was very annoying as the premium for a properly with a pool was at least £500.

They sound like dicks anyway trying to place that blame on you (don't have pool heating as an option if you're going to blame clients when it goes green) but unfortunately, to be fair to them, I 100% believe a windy storm can turn the pool green. We've left pools absolute pristine, a couple of hours later there's been a storm (even just a very small one, only thunder, no rain) and it's turned green ridiculously quickly. Idiots though, as we usually show up with a bottle of wine, explain that this happens when it's stormy and crack on with cleaning it again, it's no one's fault, certainly not the guests.

I will never understand just how miserable some people are, that they get so angry at the smallest of inconveniences?

I’m not in your industry OP but I’ve also had it up to here with people complaining about lack of air con in some of the countries I often travel with work to. Days and days of constant complaining from fellow colleagues.

Like you said, people refuse to bend and adopt the local practices, listen to advice or, I don’t know, be a little bit flexible. I always tell them that maybe it would’ve been a good idea to do a 5 minute google of certain things before travelling, instead of getting there and complaining at how subpar everything is, when it’s just normal for that country and no, you shouldn’t be expecting anything else because that’s just how it is. If you don’t like it, stay home.

I also can’t believe how many people in this world have a comprehension reading deficit. The amount of times I’ve been told ‘but it said XYZ’ and I’ve had to pull out the email / booking confirmation / schedule and stick it in their faces to show them that no, it didn’t say that, if only you had read all the info provided instead of skimming through it and making your own unreasonable expectations up.

Like my mother used to say - is the world ending? Has somebody died? If no, shut up and get on with it Grin
