Can your mood shift right at the end of the 5 years with Mirena?

i am due for Mirena change this month, been 5 years. I have loved it to be honest. Only thing that's agreed with me, stopped my periods and no major side effects.

the last couple weeks I've been feeling lower than I ever have before. I suffer from anxiety and depression anyway but the last few weeks I have been a total mess!! Never felt so down in my life, tearful, no motivation, snappy. Feel like I'm in a hole I can't get out of.

Might be just pure coincidence but I read that the hormone wearing off can effect your mood etc.

anyone else experiences this?

I am getting a replacement this week!

I could have written this word for word. I have about 6 months left to go on mine...

Yes, definitely! The same thing happened to me - word of warning though - there was no instant relief when I had it replaced. It took at least two or three weeks to settle down but until reading your post, I'd forgotten all about it.

I had the mirena for 3 years, found it mainly horrendous to be honest, I had lots of side effects and pain but getting it in wasn't a great experience so I really put off getting it removed. I found that my mood got increasingly worse each month around my time of the month to the point i was an emotional wreck for the entire week before. Got it removed as we wanted to try to conceive and I found a huge difference straight away.

Mine has been in about 6.5 years and I haven't experienced this at all.

GingerFigs · 02/08/2022 19:18

@alnawire I'm pleased you said this because I've just realised mine has been in nearly 6 years! For some naive reason I thought I'd get a letter to say it needs to come out but clearly not. Dreading having it removed so haven't chased!!

In answer to your question @User52637274 I do feel a bit emotional and unmotivated but I thought it was peri menopause.

I started notice subtle changing over the last 6 months too. It pretty much stopped my periods but over the last 6 months or so I've had sporadic light bleeding every couple months! But it's stopped again now!

Thanks all. I've been lucky to generally get on okay with it. The worst side effect was the acne it gave me the first year (all good now) but during the last few year I had awfully large and deep spots that were so painful. All around my neck and hair line, chest too. It must of been the Mirena as never had spots that bad before, they were so painful and took weeks to go away and it was continuously new spots!

thankfully ir calmed down. I hope a new one doesn't trigger it again!

I am 30 btw.

I will get this one changed but I would really like Dp to get a vasectomy in the next 5 years so perhaps I could give my body a break from hormones! We are done having babies!

Thank you! Hopefully I'll be feeling myself after a few weeks then!

I don't think my moods are purely the coil. It's probably a mixture of other things too but this just not helping at all!

but I've also read online it can stay in longer than 5 years?

Hi,I’m 51 and have been feeling really tired, depressed and anxious. My coil also needs replacing as it’s been 5 years, and I have read that when the coil is expiring, it stops making progesterone and can cause anxiety and depression and fatigue. I haven’t been feeling well for months, so this could be why. I’m so glad I’m not the only one.
