What do people think of these houses?

some are sold but we are looking in towns and villages as my husband has recently got a job at JCB… they seem quite overpriced, maybe it’s the area? We are from Lancashire and it’s much cheaper. Bit concerned!

Prefer the villages but our budget is really 470 max… don’t seem to get much even though more rural?!

What other things are essential to you, schools, shops, transport. Where is his job based how far is he happy to commute. Are you relocating for good, id you dont know the area at all you might be better renting for a while, will jCB offer a relocation package.

Regso · 02/08/2022 15:26

Schools seem good across these areas from what we can tell. But it’s just me and DH at the moment. I just think they’re all quite pricey for what you get?!

In terms of appearance, numbers 4 and 5 will be easier to sell on (broader market appeal).

Well numbers 3 &5 are already sold STC, number 2 is well over your budget and I don’t think you’ll get number 1 for less than asking as it’s an offers over.

So the only one remotely possible for you on your list is number 4.

I really like this one www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/123851111#/?channel=RES_BUY

I used to live near Repton. It was always considered a very desirable location.

morningchips · 02/08/2022 15:43

I live in one of the above posted areas and well priced properties tend to sell within around a week of going on the market here. There's far more demand to buy here than desire to sell it seems. We got less house for more money versus where we moved from but better facilities, schools and area in general.

We're in one of the villages so on the fringes of the countryside with all of the benefits of that, but all the advantages of being in a town too. Just a mile from town, good schools, supermarkets, transport links and easily accessible major road networks. I don't know the other areas well enough to comment, but here, you're definitely paying for the area being the "full package" so to speak. We're definitely not rural in the true sense of the word so prices don't reflect that.

TheIsaacs · 02/08/2022 15:48

Setting the search parameters to 10 miles around it Uttoxeter, max price £475k and min 4 beds gets you these alternatives

Number one
Number two
Number three
Number four
NUmber five (5 bed!)
Number six (another 5 bed)

KarrotKake · 02/08/2022 15:52

Prices look about right to me.

I wouldn't live in Repton and go to JCB every day - or will he have some home working??

Not sure I'd buy any of those, tbf. Repton 2 are the best, but not for the job location. The Alton 2 personally aren't for me, a both have a bedroom downstairs. So I guess that leaves the Uttoxeter one. Off to search.

Regso · 02/08/2022 15:55

@longtompot i thought it was nice and nice location but seems loads for what really is a three bed?! Garden looks like it needs worm too… hmm

@Pumpkinsanddaisies yes I’ve heard good things about Repton, I like the look of it!

This is too far the other way from me to know what the area is like, but just on houses, what about

Ooh I love these threads!

First house - Seems appropriately priced for the area. I'm not usually a fan of new builds but seems to be a good amount of space and good use of space/nice layout. Garden is a bit overlooked however.

Second house - nice setting but overpriced considering it's classed as 3 bedrooms when really it's just 2 bedrooms and an extra room downstairs.

Third house - another one that's lied about the amount of bedrooms, but is still appropriately priced considering the lovely garden and how nicely it is done up inside.

Fourth house - worst of the lot. This is probably just about my personal taste and the fact that the pictures are bad. Otherwise appropriately priced for the area.

Fifth house - best looking house. Maybe a bit overpriced considering all the work that needs doing but it probably went for more due to its privacy and kerb appeal.

That second one, the barn conversion, is lovely!

I don't know the area at all but my comments on these are:

  1. Parking issues - nowhere to park out the front, car parked on the pavement down the side - garage is presumably round the back - you'll never use it, or will resent having to go through the back garden all the time. Avoid!
  2. Shame there's no lawn - beautiful borders that will look really dull in winter. What's it overlooking? Will it be built on? Awkward angles in the loft rooms - you can't get any full height wardrobes in them. Does the fact they've got SOO much off road parking mean it's a busy road? Beautifully presented though.
  3. Nicely presented but just feels a bit "meh". The bathroom upstairs has a bath tucked under the eaves, so no shower upstairs. That would piss me off having to go up and down stairs to have a shower in the morning, unless you used Bedroom 3 as your main bedroom. Looks a pretty small plot of land.
  4. Looks like it was built by the same company that built my house! Could do with a new kitchen (who designs a breakfast bar like that?!). Conservatory looks like it has a polycarbonate roof, and I don't like the fact that it covers the whole width of the house, more likely to leak and also suffer from extremes of heat and cold. Decent size otherwise, especially comparing the price to some of the others.
  5. Obviously quite dated, so without knowing the area, I'd wonder why it was the same price as #4. For a 3 bed, it's a pretty good size. Looks like it's on one of the main roads in to and out of the village.
I am quite surprised at the prices though. No. 2 particularly seems very highly priced. Possibly due to its proximity to Alton Towers and the increasing number of AirBnBs in the area perhaps?
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/08/2022 16:49

I quite like 4 but I'd worry those lovely fields round the back will be built on, so thats worth checking
