This is about me isn't it.....

Sometimes I'll think about posting about a situation on MN and then think to myself, nope, because if the other parties involved saw it they would very easily recognise themselves and it would just be a shit show.
Every day, I read things on here that would be very outing to someone else who knew of the situation being posted about and I always half expect (and a little bit want) to see a reply on the post that says "Oi Carol, why are you posting about me!", or along those lines.
I've never seen it yet, but MN has such a large readership that surely people must recognise themselves in posts they read, even if some details have been changed.
So how come it never happens? Or does it? (and can I see links please).

It generally happens on the posts that get taken down quickly because of privacy concerns.

A few months back there was a sister posting about a wedding and her sister, who she was bitching about, posted the actual story and private messaged a few of us after the thread was pulled to say thanks for the support and clarify a few things.

Not sure if it's ever happened here but I was on another forum where a poster said the most awful things about her brother-in-law and he saw it! She stupidly used a photo of herself as her avatar so she couldn't even deny it was her. A massive argument ensued both online and in real life and it caused a rift in the family.
It was kind of hilariously awful.

Oh really. That's interesting, because there are many occasions where I read what OP has said and thought I'd love to hear the other persons version as I'm sure it would shed a different light.

@Littleduck80 it was one of those where people had already started to see through the op a little as her story didn't quite add up to her being the victim as she claimed. It was an interesting one!

It has happened a few times. I have recognised people on here and I just scroll on by. I'd rather not know!

Not that sharpest tool in the shed then. If you're going to be bitch, at least try and hide your ID. There is a part of me that secretly lives for other peoples dramas though so I'd probably have invested heavily in that.

Not quite the same but when I was going through a depressed period of my life, I posted a fairly negative response on a thread about people's experience of marriage and my comment was one of a few lifted by the Daily Mail for their lazy brand of hack "journalism".

My DH somehow saw the article some time later and he recognised my username, so he confronted me about it. I hadn't said anything about him specifically and it could have been much, much worse; I apologised and thankfully he understood why I'd written what I had, even if it stung for him to read it.

I have been on MN for years now but that incident gives me pause when I'm about to divulge anything.
