Morning all, I've had a job offer for a fantastic job in a field I have been trying to get into for a long time. I'm due to start at the end of the month and due to hand in notice tomorrow (my boss is on annual leave, back tomorrow and I'd like to do it face to face then email formally)
However - the company I'm starting with have stated that they are moving to new premises and are not allowed to divulge yet where they are.
This could mess me up financially, my salary is taking a hit as I will have to commute as it is (currently home working) and as I'm starting out fresh in the field I can't command any higher.
I have gone from ecstatic and celebrating to feeling ill at working out train/fuel prices.
I don't know what to do.

I would try to push your start date with them out until you know this information. It's really important and I can't believe they won't tell you where they're moving to!

It's crazy, I wouldn't have applied if the travelling was going to be unrealistic. I can't think straight today.

Tell your new boss that you wouldn't have applied if the travelling was unrealistic, that the unexpected change may mean you have to withdraw your acceptance. You are very keen but .... can they at least give you a clue?

Staynow · 02/08/2022 11:12

Tell them you won't be able to take the position on the current pay if the travel is excessive and so you won't be able to confirm your acceptance/will have to withdraw acceptance of the position until they can tell you where the new premises are. Don't hand in your notice. They're messing you around. What is the field you've been trying to get into?

The new employers are being totally unreasonable to expect you to decide whether to accept a job if you don't know where it is! Surest your normal place of work is part of your T&C?

Changedmynamefor · 02/08/2022 17:15

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say to them that you can’t proceed until you know the new location and can you stay on hold until the announce it. Have they given you a timeframe for when they will release the info?

Could you ask them to tell you;

  1. how many miles it is from your home address
  2. whether there is a direct train from your local train station to their nearest train station
  3. how many miles it is from the nearest train station.

Thanks all, so I've spoken to them again and the location has been narrowed down a little. I now know that's it's not going to be unachievable.

Now I'm just wobbling about everything else, but that's a different thread :)
