Hot flushes - help me please!

nancy75 · 01/08/2022 19:23

I’m 47, probably peri menopause, periods far less frequent. Generally feel ok apart from the hot flushes.
I frequently feel like I am actually cooking from the inside out - what can I take to calm it down?
obviously need to see the GP but there is a long wait & I feel like I might burst in to flames while waiting.

I find washing my hair in the morning and leaving it wet helps cool me down. I don't have any real answers but it's horrific, I'm a hot sweaty mess these days.

Fireblanket · 01/08/2022 19:27

I'm on Zumenon 2mg daily. That sorted them RIGHT out!

nancy75 · 01/08/2022 19:32

Can I buy Zumenon over the counter? I’m desperate, I’m a big sweaty mess too!

The nighttime was the worst for me, and made me sleep deprived.

I swapped to the thinnest single duvet I could find and take a ice cold flannel and cold gel packs to bed with me.

nancy75 · 01/08/2022 19:39

Yes, my sleep is suffering - I’ve done away with the duvet all together. It seems to be all day (frequently) and it’s making me feel quite out of sorts

Ahh yes, I remember the days I used to look quite put together, no point straightening my hair as it will just frizz once it hits my overheated neck and makeup just slides off these days, highlighting the fact my upper lip is damp.

Christ I took my 20s and 30's for granted!

nancy75 · 01/08/2022 20:07

could be worse, mine is damp & HAIRY (along with the new beard I’m growing) - I’m a right looker at the moment!

HRT is really good. Get really firm on the phone with the GP. Wool duvet helps with the night sweats.

nancy75 · 01/08/2022 20:13

Quite happy to take HRT but can’t get an appointment with the GP for 3 weeks & want something now before I melt 🥵

The nights are the worst although the humidity at the moment means I don't know what is a flush or the weather Blush

🤣🤣 it's unfair isn't it!

nicknamehelp · 01/08/2022 20:20

HRT will help but in the mean time. Loose natural fabric clothes, spray can water (savers have them for £1) spray pulse points, face and back of neck, hand held electric fan. If really bad ice cube rubbed over pulse points and back of neck. Try not yo get stressed, if get a flush after eating note foods which cause it. I struggle with citrus fruits. In bed a cold damp towel helps. keep fluids up also.

DramaAlpaca · 01/08/2022 20:23

I found my flushes calmed down a lot when I took Menopace along with Boots own brand Red Clover and Isoflavones supplement.

godmum56 · 01/08/2022 20:25

I did menopause many years ago. choices were premarin, which i wouldn't touch, and patches which turned me into the harridan from hell, so I did it cold turkey. What worked were all the old things....natural fibre clothing, plenty of non alcoholic liquid, fans and open windows. I didn't find cutting down on sugar and alcohol helped (thank goodness) but I am not a big drinker or sugar snaffler. I am not dissing modern HRT by rhe way, I would have taken it like a shot if it had been availble oh the other thing that helped was swearing.......much swearing

CalistoNoSolo · 01/08/2022 20:41

Before I got hrt I had a gel pillow that really helped - it didn't need to be put in the fridge it was just really cold. Very lightweight duvet and keeping my hair off the back of my neck. Maca pills may take the edge off (they did for me for quite a while) but you really need hrt, it's life changing.

Hrt cured the sweats, insomnia and brain fog immediately within days (the insomnia was the worst, I felt like I was slowly going mad and was verging on suicidal). My gp was excellent - I had a phone consult a couple of days after filling in the online form, she booked me in for a blood pressure test a couple of days later and got the scrip and the hrt a couple of days after that. Can you get a phone appointment more quickly?

Try boots evening primrose tablets

nancy75 · 01/08/2022 20:44

I’ve got the swearing covered!
windows all open & I’ve been taking those blue ice block cool bag things to bed (DH clearly thinks I’ve lost the plot)
Really with my new sweaty face, beard & covered in ice blocks I don’t know how he can keep his hands off me!
will get meno supplement things from boots tomorrow and pray they work

Cool max pillow insert from Amazon is good.
Sugar, particularly wine, is a trigger for me.
Hope you get them sorted soon.

Barbarolo · 01/08/2022 20:53

I take Boots high strength evening primrose oil and also Boots starflower oil every day. They’ve completely stopped my hot flushes!

Halfwreckedbykids · 01/08/2022 20:54

Tge weight, water retention, nightmares and practically no sleep are killing me too.
I ve started key for her supplements...just a week so fingers crossed they help.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 01/08/2022 20:57

Red clover. Capsules not tablets.

nancy75 · 01/08/2022 21:05

I’ve ordered a cooling pillow & I’ll be on the doorstep at boots for opening time.
Im sorry to hear others are suffering, it is truly crap.
on the plus side, when we can’t afford to pay the gas bill in the winter the family can all sit round me to keep warm 🔥
