I'm not easily offended but I don't find "jokes" about raping babies funny. 🤷‍♀️

AllFreeOwls · 01/08/2022 22:48

Definitely a marmite production. Do you like South Park? That will probably tell you if you'll like it or not.

It's not a joke.

That is a genuine tragedy of the aids crisis.

Absolutely boring. Same jokes repeated again and again while people bafflingly howl with laughter.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 01/08/2022 23:39

Well everyone around me was laughing their heads off whenever they said this. So it must have been funny.

happinesslovescompany · 01/08/2022 23:40

The funniest part for us was the real Mormons outside accosting everyone and saying get the real story here Smile

MobLife · 01/08/2022 23:41

Well, I imagine they understood the joke was about the arrogant American white saviour Mormons and the ridiculous idea that there is a loving God.

I think it's highly unlikely you came across a theatre full of people who thought raping babies was funny. I think you've just misunderstood.

happinesslovescompany · 02/08/2022 00:00

Should have said we really enjoyed it too. Definitely agree with the 'if you love South Park' comments

Bigwetdog · 02/08/2022 00:05

Second thread in a few days!

Really boring. Unfunny. Didn't find it particularly offensive. Just meh

Everyone I know who loved it is a bit... How can I put this without being offensive...

Beetr00t · 03/08/2022 13:45

I laughed so hard my face hurt! Don't go if easily offended, otherwise if you're up for a good laugh then go.

It wasn’t for me. For context, I enjoyed quite a bit of Avenue Q, so I’m not obviously prudish but this crossed too many lines for me.
yes, it’s satire, I get that, but it seemed unsure whether it wanted to mock the LDS or the community that they were visiting more. IMO, it seemed that they presented the LDS elders as naïve, arrogant and out of their depth in Uganda, so very clearly setting them up to be mocked. However, the portrayal of Africa/ Uganda was played “straight” for the most part, leading to some very stereotyped portrayals of a backward nation who believed that baby rape cured AIDS, and then were persuaded to swap to frogs as more effective amongst other examples. I understand that this was supposed to reflect how the LDS perceived Africa as a whole, but there was little / nothing that allowed the audience to see that the Ugandans viewed the LDS as fallible / ridiculous in their turn.
one example amongst many was that of one of the elders repeatedly failing to remember/ pronounce one of the villagers name correctly - ok, that was his arrogance etc - but she was then portrayed as adoring him regardless, which felt all wrong.

TLDR -not my sense of humour, and likely to be pretty marmite viewing if my group were anything to go by. The production and singing ability were excellent though, just wasted on the material in my opinion😬

I enjoy satire.
I enjoy comedy that pushes limits and plays on one’s sense of ‘rightness’ or righteousness or whatever.
I love theatre. As in, I love the act pf people coming together to express themselves.
I enjoy musicals.
Ive watched hundreds of shows over the last two decades and most of the time tuned into something of worth in every show (as a minimum).

this is one of the handful that I found utterly poor.
Obvious, lazy and just stupid.
